      Forest Ecologist

As the staff scientist for a non-profit conservation organization my responsibilities were many and varied. The organization's area of interest was the Chattahoochee/Oconee National Forest. My primary responsibilities could be broken down into three different categories. First, official responses to US Forest Service scoping notices. As a scientist I was responsible for verifying effectiveness and consequences of proposed Forest Service actions. Next, I was heavily involved in developing a set of projects collaboratively with the Forest Service personnel that would avoid controversy and get some much needed work prepared for implementation once funding could be secured. Finally, I was responsible for coordinating the District Leader Program, which is composed of volunteers and served as ForestWatch's eyes on the ground. My responsibilities included training of volunteers in ecological and forestry concepts, map production and analysis, Forest Plan interpretation, and field visits for proposed projects. All aspects of this job called on my training as a landscape ecologist and my GIS training. Show less
