Similarily large-scale heat pumps are operated to consume electricity for heat production, according to the electricity balancing demand, i.e., electricity consumption occurs when there is surpluses of electricity from solar and wind power. To enable this unconventional operation of the district heating system, large-scale thermal storages is needed with the possibility for long-term storage.
