      Activities and Societies: Society of Schmitt Fellows My PhD research focused on petroporphyrins and asphaltenes, two components of crude oil, especially heavy oils such as tar sands. I developed procedures for extracting and purifying petropoprhyrins from crude oil. I also studied the relationship between petroporphyrins and asphaltenes, specifically the impact of petroporphyrins on asphaltene self-assembly at oil-water interfaces and in the bulk oil phase.
