      Maintenance Engineering

Design and Developing an Asset Life Cycle Plan for Railway TrackThis project focuses on developing an asset life cycle plan that specifies for all components of the infrastructure what type of maintenance to perform, and when to do that, such that the life cycle costs are minimized. An integrated optimization tool is developed to schedule preventive maintenance and renewal activities by grouping them and simultaneously finding the optimal balance between them.

Thesis: "Multi-Criteria Production Scheduling with Learning Effect of Workers"This master thesis deals with scheduling set of jobs in a hybrid flow shop manufacturing environment that includes a series of production stages with parallel machines in each stage. Sequence-dependent setup times such as changing tools and removal of failures were considered between the processing of two successive jobs. Since the human factor has an important effect on setup, by the processing of similar tasks frequently worker skills improve and she/he can perform the setup at a greater pace. Several mathematical programming models that incorporates these aspects of the problem are developed to represent the manufacturer and consumer concerns in real world problems. Several exact, heuristic and meta-heuristic methods are proposed to solve the developed models and compared their efficiency in a set of well-designed experiments. Show less

Scheduling, involving setup times/costs, leads to better allocation of resources over time to perform a collection of required tasks. This dissertation examines how the learning effect of workers and a combination of setup activities can be used to optimize resource utilization in manufacturing systems and maintenance services. The results show that the proposed techniques perform well in reducing setup times/costs and eliminate the need for setups through proper scheduling. For practitioners, this dissertation work provides optimization techniques and tools through scheduling that can help keep costs down and allows companies to operate according to budget and time constraints.
