      Global engineering challenge

I participated in Global Engineering Challenge at the University of Sheffield where I worked on a project in a group of people from different engineering disciplines such as chemical, civil and mechanical. Our group had to come up with a solution for a real-life problem in a developing country. This encouraged me to think outside the box and expand my problem solving skills and raised my awareness of global issues. I improved my teamwork and leadership skills by motivating the group and encouraging members to engage in discussions by contributing ideas and suggestions. We presented our solution in front of the board of academic staff and other students and responded to questions about our idea. I learnt how to communicate ideas both visually and verbally to engage the audience. I submitted a formal report outlining our proposal ideas including information on time-scale, estimated costs and sustainability. Show less

Summer placement student - institute of cellular medicine

I participated in a paid summer placement with the Osteoarthritis Genetics Group. Their work involves identifying and characterizing the genes that confer risk towards the development and progression of osteoarthritis. I was working independently in the laboratory, following a protocol to extract DNA from saliva samples. I collected data from the DNA using a NanoDrop spectrophotometer and ran the DNA using gel electrophoresis. I collated the information in a file which I presented to my supervisor. The protocol required precise lab technique and I significantly improved my practical skills during my time in the laboratory. I participated in group meetings and was introduced to tissue culture and polymerase chain reaction (PCR) techniques. This opportunity allowed me to develop my communication skills and increased my understanding of practical biology. I was given a great deal of responsibility as failure to correctly follow the procedure or contamination would have resulted in the sample having to be discarded. I was made aware of lab health and safety and the importance of following regulations as I was dealing with mutagenic chemicals such as ethidium bromide (EtBr). Show less

      Engineering you're hired

During this project week, I worked within a multidisciplinary group to develop a sleep monitoring system for diabetic patients to monitor their glucose levels during the night and detect episodes of hypoglycemia. This improved my understanding of project planning using Gantt charts. We had to consider costs and other factors such as approval criteria for medical device regulatory bodies such as MHRA and FDA. I also gained greater insight into potential patent implications when developing a medical device and other risk factors within the project. Each day we presented our research to a boardroom of academic staff who questioned the technical details and feasibility of our ideas. This experience increased my confidence in presenting to large groups of people and responding to challenging questions. I thoroughly enjoyed this insight into the real life applications of engineering. Show less
