I spent my fall semester of 2013 at home in New Jersey, working part-time, taking classes at a local community college, researching schools, and filling out applications. I wanted to transfer to a smaller school with more prestigious academic standing, and I also wanted a school committed to being environmentally conscious. I discovered Allegheny College through a list of the greenest schools in the United States, and I truly found my calling through this college. I have been inspired by the wonderful professors and students there; I was compelled as a student to work hard and apply myself in as many ways as possible because of the competitive, supportive, and ambitious atmosphere on Allegheny's campus. Below is my senior thesis, as well as a collaborative research project from my sophomore year as examples of my work. Show less

      Jun 2014 - Jul 2014
      Environmental Educator

I personally designed and sought out an internship with the ecotourism company Guides of Oahu in the summer of 2014. I helped the owner of the company, Mitch Berger, to organize tours, engage potential participants, and guide the tours themselves. I also created several presentations for the company and compiled a final report of all I had learned during the five weeks I worked with Mitch. I gained credit through Allegheny College with the help of the Environmental Science department head, Eric Pallant. I sent him detailed journals of what work I did as well as the presentations and final report. The tours consisted of hiking through the rainforest and into sacred Hawaiian sites to educate the participants about Hawaiian culture and history, the flora and fauna present in Hawaii, weather and astrological information, natural medicine, survival tactics, and the many uses of the plants found in Hawaii. Davies Service Leader Representative

As a Davies Service Leader, I work as an ambassador from the Allegheny College community to the Meadville area. Our goal within the Davies Service Leader Program is to foster relationships between the college and the surrounding town. I complete projects for the Meadville Area Recreation Center that they would otherwise not have the time and resources to complete. I am currently working on organizing events for families in the area so that they have a place to enjoy wholesome, fun, and safe activities. I am also coordinating new marketing techniques for the recreation center. Show less
