      Once I completed my OOW qualification, I become fully employed by Maersk and held the position of 3rd officer on a container ship cruising from Asia to Europe. I was solo watch keeper ensuring the safe navigation of the vessel. Additionally, I was responsible for the management and maintenance of the safety and lifesaving systems on board. My contract ended when I took voluntary redundancy during the economic turndown. Starting my career on the water as a deck cadet with Maersk was a fantastic introduction to the maritime industry. I sailed on both container ships and chemical tankers cruising worldwide as I studied and worked my way through the ranks before gaining OOW Unlimited qualification.

      I joined Holland America line working on a large cruise ship carrying 1400 guests and 600 crew members. I embarked on the vessel as 4th officer and worked my way up to 3rd officer towards the end of my contract. My main duties included watch keeping, new crew inductions, delivering safety training and drills, and maintaining the 18 life boats on board.

      Travelling out to the North Sea on platform supply vessels up to 60m in length and carrying 12 crew. My daily tasks included passage planning, navigation, inspection and maintenance of on board safety equipment. I also spent time in the chair driving the vessel and learning how to manoeuvre alongside the rigs safely under the guidance of the chief officer and master during cargo operations.

      During this time with Holland America Line I completed six separate contracts cruising worldwide. We had up to 900 crew members on board for which I was responsible for new crew inductions and safety training. We carried out regular drills which incorporated special area training such as galley fire training. Duties further included passage planning, worldwide navigation, and also the responsibilities of senior watch keeping officer in charge.

      On M/Y Dubai I worked with a deck team of fifteen among a crew of 50, holding the position of 2nd officer and medical officer on board. My duties encompassed safety training of the crew, training inductions, navigation officer, working through the planned maintenance schedule, corrections of all charts and publications. Additionally, driving of large tenders, purchasing of equipment and supplies for the deck department, maintaining medical supplies, helicopter operations, and assisting with work required for the Lloyds surveys.       Authorized 1st Class Pilot on the Humber Esturary and the busiest waterway in the United Kingdom servicing ships up to 40,000 DWT and 11m draft in the ports of Hull, Immingham, Grimsby, Goole and River Trent. Training to become a Pilot on the Rivers Humber, Ouse and Trent, servicing all ports and some 200+ berths.Learning ship handling techniques on the tidal river, (with tidal streams in excess of 4 knots) as well as lock and dock manouvering.
