    • The Craft Centre

      Sept 2014 - Jun 2017
      Till Operator and Stock Counter

Fortunate that my grandma owned Paignton’s most popular craft shop, here I would work from a young age to help serve customers and keep on top of stacking shelves.A key part of this role required taking frequent stock counts; restocking the huge variety of wool in particular allowed me to gain greater understanding into how serial numbers worked, as well as seeing first hand the intricacies involved with running a commercial business.

    • Victoria’s Pantry

      Jun 2017 - Sept 2017
      Food Service Worker and Clerk

Working behind the counter serving a variety of food and drink, this summer job allowed me to gain further confidence in interacting with customers.Working 40-50 hour weeks over this summer holiday despite only being 14 allowed me to not only develop an understanding as to what it’s like to begin to independently earn money, but also get into a routine of early starts and late finishes. I really enjoyed my time working at the pantry, and loved how no two customer interactions were the same; some customers wanted triple scoop ice cream, others wanted a lactose-free macchiato. Having the responsibility of running the pantry on my own on a multitude of occasions and locking up all by myself as a key holder also allowed me to gain a true feeling of responsibility, which I really enjoyed and likely helped my independence and social skills grow into what I have become today. • The Boathouse

      Jun 2018 - Sept 2018
      Kitchen Porter

Despite only being 15, here I took on the role of Kitchen Porter at one of the most popular restaurants in South Devon. The long shifts with no explicit breaks, but rather requiring my own discretion as to when there were less jobs to be done and less plates to wash, meant I worked with maximum efficiency. Moreover the variety of duties I had to simultaneously perform, such as preparing side plates and constructing sauce concoctions, whilst staying on top of washing all plates, cutlery and glasses, meant I had to stay proactive and productive. This role taught me the vital importance of time management at a young age, an attribute which has been embedded in me ever since. Show less

    • SI Design

      Jun 2019 - Sept 2019
      Manual Labour

I immersed myself into a summer of unskilled manual labour, immediately following my GCSEs. This experience provided invaluable exposure to the architecture and construction industry, instilling a robust work ethic within a structured 8-to-6 timeframe. The construction site environment necessitated heightened situational awareness, and meticulous attention to detail, for both safety and operational efficiency. While I regularly sought guidance from supervisors when faced with unique challenges, I also actively engaged with other team members to explore diverse problem-solving approaches. This collaborative mindset enabled me to discover innovative solutions, and understand the varied strategies employed by colleagues to overcome obstacles. My commitment to never leaving a task incomplete and consistently giving my utmost effort cultivated discipline, perseverance, and proactive problem-solving skills. These attributes, along with my collaborative approach, resonate with the demands of a legal career, reflecting adaptability, innovation, and effective teamwork in navigating complex scenarios. • Marston's PLC

      Aug 2020 - Jun 2021
      Bar Staff and Waiter

Starting as a 17 year old, I managed designated sections of the pub, typically overseeing around 10 tables per shift. My responsibilities encompassed taking orders, serving food and drinks, processing payments, and maintaining cleanliness. This role served as a platform to develop my interpersonal skills, ensuring a welcoming and sociable atmosphere for customers.Upon reaching 18, my responsibility increased to include bartending duties, and overseeing larger sections of the pub (such as the outdoor area). Navigating the challenges provided by COVID, including table service protocols and stringent yet evolving drinking regulations, honed my attention to detail and bolstered my communication skills through customer interactions.Balancing this role with A-levels and academy rugby cultivated my proficiency in multitasking and time management, equipping me with valuable skills transferable to a legal career that demands similar diligence and adaptability. Jun 2021 - Sept 2021
      Supermarket Employee

As a 'Fresh' Stock Assistant, I was responsible for stocking fresh items like meat, eggs, milk, and fish before store hours. As I grew more confident, my role expanded to cover restocking throughout the entire supermarket, and I was trained to assist at the tills. This experience was invaluable in understanding the dynamics of large-scale businesses. Interacting with various management layers provided insights into organisational structures and internal hierarchies, enhancing my understanding of how businesses operate on a broader scale, and enriching my commercial understanding.Despite the demanding nature of long and varied shifts, I embraced the challenges and thrived in a customer-facing role; this experience honed my interpersonal skills and sales acumen – both pivotal for client interactions in a legal career, preparing me for the diverse professional scenarios faced as a solicitor.I held this position throughout the summer after completing A levels, before exiting to begin university.
