I sat with the firm's Litigation, Advisory and Regulatory (LAR) team for one week and the Commercial & Infrastructure (C&I) team for the second. The LAR department focused specifically on procurement law in the public sector which allowed me to explore complex procurements. I was given real tasks that contributed to meetings and conferences which I attended. I conducted various research tasks using Westlaw, Lexis and Practical Law. I was also responsible for evaluating the reasons given for various scores in a large-scale procurement against the assessment criteria; forensically analysing whether the reasoning sufficiently justified their scores. Clients included some of the largest public sector bodies in the UK including NHS Trusts, Housing Associations and Local Authorities. This helped me to develop a strong understanding of the public sector. Naturally, work in the public sector requires an active engagement with current affairs in politics as well as the commercial arena which I found particularly compelling. Whilst with C&I I was able to see the procurement process from the transactional perspective which was fascinating. I was working on long contractual documents for NHS Trusts ensuring a consistent style throughout the lengthy documents. I also drafted minutes for a board meeting and carried out further research tasks. My supervisor in C&I was also managing a private client file which allowed me to contrast the two practices and gain a personal insight into private client work. I also contacted various other lawyers at the firm to meet and discuss their work to gain a broad insight into the firm and their work. I met with solicitors from their medical law and property departments. Show less
