I was the instructor for freshmen and sophomore writing courses. I created my own syllabus, lesson plans, and writing assignments. Students engaged in daily reflective writing on course content or related issues such as adapting to college life and what students wanted out of their college education. I gave lectures that tied relevant topics to rhetorical concepts, e.g. examining perfume music videos for instances of ethos and pathos. I shared rubrics openly with students in order to communicate my expectations for them. The most satisfying event in this role was watching a student with weak writing skills gain confidence in their writing. I ended up teaching this person again as a sophomore. Show less I was selected to lead an editorial team consisting of other graduate students. Together, we read through about 200 manuscripts, which included poetry, short stories, and flash fiction. At least three people read each submission and voted "yes" or "no" to a piece. I read through all the pieces and acted as a tie breaker when the two previous readers voted differently. I also interacted directly with all the poets and writers who submitted their manuscripts to us. I solicited pieces and also informed people if their writing had been selected or rejected for publication. My most satisfying moment was convincing someone who had written us off as a literary magazine to submit a few pieces. In this role, I oversee peer tutoring, supplemental instruction, and the writing center; recruit, hire, train, and evaluate about thirty student workers; lead assessment efforts of tutors, consultants, and other programs in the University College; and develop new programs as needed. My work with the writing center, in particular, has been exceptional. In the writing center, we offer services in three modalities: face-to-face, asynchronous online, and synchronous video chat. We also offer a writing lab, a walk-in service where students can work independently on an assignment and ask for assistance as they complete their projects. Under my leadership, the writing center’s face-to-face traffic increased 100% from fall 2017 to fall 2018 and the asynchronous traffic has increased about 36%. I collect and report this data regularly to my supervisor and other university stakeholders. I work hard at building relationships with faculty, hosting meetings or workshops to demonstrate the value of writing center work. Show less I directly supervised seventeen peer tutors, organized their schedules, and reserved rooms as needed. I digitized many of our workflow processes such as signing students in for sessions, writing reports about student progress, and tracking student participation. I ensured that enough tutors were hired to meet student demand and that all tutors had gone through the training process. My biggest accomplishments in this position include increasing the accuracy with which we tracked student participation and signing in students electronically rather than on paper. These along with my willingness to take on extra projects like marketing designs aided me in my eventual promotion to Manager of Testing and Tutoring. Show less
