      Sept 1997 - Jun 2006

As head of the Social Studies department, I served as liaison between the department (and its various members) and the school administration at a monthly Faculty Council meeting as well as on an individual basis, developing educational goals for the department and providing leadership to ensure all goals were met, overseeing department affairs (such as budget, resources, exams, schedule development...), as well as promoting a collaborative and cooperative work environment that facilitated the development and delivery of programs. Show less In a diverse school of 2000 students, I: - met the provincially-mandated curricular expectations and outcomes of the Social Studies Program of Studies; - provided a learning environment, which included a dynamic teacher presence in the classroom, interesting and engaging instructional resources, and an atmosphere that was fun yet challenging, to prepare my students to a) strive for excellence in their studies, b) be prepared to write standardized provincial exams (grades 9 + 12) and, c) provide them with the skills and abilities (academic and other) necessary to achieve success in their post-secondary lives. - was always prepared to work with students of different backgrounds and skills, be they in an applied, academic, or International Baccalaureate setting, in a way that allowed them to learn using the unique individual strengths and assets they brought to class each day. Provided bus/walking tours of the National Capital region to groups of various ages, tailoring both the delivery and the content to the specifics of each audience. My specific responsibilities included being knowledgeable and informed about all facets of Ottawa life, from its inception to the present, and communicating the information in both an informative and entertaining fashion. The work also called for the ability to multi-task as I was responsible for delivering the tour while also instructing the driver and addressing any questions and concerns from the audience. • St Laurent Academy

      Feb 2009 - Aug 2015
Teacher (Sr. Social Studies and English)

As a small (100 students) private school, our focus was on facilitating student success by providing an individualized learning environment based on each student's specific learning needs. Employing a multiple-intelligences approach to learning, my classroom setup and lessons were developed with an experiential focus - the most effective learning environment is one where the students are able to 'live' the material and see its relevance to themselves. Within this context, I was tasked with developing year and unit plans for each course taught (Social Studies grades 5 through 8, English grades 7 and 8), developing and delivering meaningful, informative, and interesting lessons that respected each students learning needs, and ensuring an accurate and informative assessment (formative and summative) of each student's progress. In addition to those responsibilities, I also: - developed a character-based education program known as STARS as well as the weekly classroom resources used by teachers; - developed, in collaboration with colleagues, a school community building program intended to develop camaraderie and leadership within the student body; - planned, organized, and oversaw an annual week-long celebration of diversity and internationalism called Global Village; - developed the school's annual yearbook, Passport; Show less
