  Power and Utilties Operator My tenure at the paper mill started on the paper machines. I started out working on the Beloit winder and quickly moved up to 5th hand due to retirements. The 5th hand was basically responsible for operating the reel crane- transporting the reel of paper from the backend of the machine to the winder. Also, both of these jobs required working in a team environment, especially during a sheet break or outage. After the 5th hand position, I worked briefly (4 months) as 4th hand. This job required the employee to assist in all areas of winder and machine operations. Individual responsibilities focused on winder operations, rope runs, and the machine steam system.From the paper machines, I transferred to the power area. The first job in this line of progression is the utility person. The basic responsibilities of this job were to assist the boiler crew in all aspects of boiler operation, specifically unloading coal cars, overseeing the distribution of bark into the boiler, and working with the vacuum and ash system. From this position I moved to operator C (water plant operator). As operator C, I was responsible for overseeing and treating the incoming water from the Tennessee River. The water that was used in the boiler had to meet strict guidelines- This was accomplished through the use of sand filters, anions, cations, mixed beds, and condensate polishers.
