  Technical Assistant and Field Coordinator for Rapid Bird Survey in Kamprok Yum, Prey Veng provinnce

  Som Piseth submitted a proposal to the CBCFund (Cambodia Bird Conservation Fund (CBC), Fauna & Flora International (FFI) in May 2018 to protect a 23ha relict floodedforest in Peam Reang district, Prey Veng province. However, the CBCFund Committee foundthat the proposal lacked evidence supporting the importance of the site for bird conservationto approve the grant request. The Committee recommended that a CBCFund member or designated ornithologist conducta rapid bird survey to assess the site’s habitat and bird conservation significance/potential.The Rapid Bird Survey in Kamprok Yum survey conducted on 11 February 2018 by Fred Goes, with Som Piseth and local security officer Inn Vuthy. The habitat consists of various species of shrubs (‘Daem tros’), vines, invasive plants (Mimosa pigra) and sparse trees (Barringtonia ‘Daem Reang’ reported). Access was opened at different points and people were encountered cutting woody shrub for firewood. The survey team recorded 50 bird species within and around the site.The main recommendations stemming from the survey are: To assign/find/invite knowledgeable ornithologist/birdwatcher to conduct a similar survey monthly, to further document the use of the site by birds Include the grounds of nearby Vat Chong Krouch to the site survey, as tall trees there may serve as roosting sites for birds feeding at Prey Kompork Yum To use a drone to obtain photographic/video recordings of the heronry during its breeding season, allowing to assess it size and significance To raise awareness about the site concomitantly with gathering funds from pagodas, companies, private donors, etc. to build a walkway and viewing platform to allow birdwatching and colony observation through a spotting scope (without disturbance) To develop local birding / nature tourism as funding source of a protection team To conduct environmental awareness classes and birdwatching initiations amongst school children of Peam Reang district.
