There, I was able to learn more about myself than I ever knew before and be taught by bright, respectable people. I learned quickly about my skill with English and writing. I focused on taking classes that reflected my personal interests when I could. Meaning, I took as much English as I could! This lead to making connections with English faculty members, which lead to being offered a Writing Center Consultant position and eventually Writing Center Manager. Otherwise, I enjoyed my electives and other general knowledge I picked up in class and in the halls. Notably, Energy in Society (types of energy and how energy is generated and consumed), Mathmatics (focusing mainly on logic and algorithms), and Journalism (old and new media). Show less

Skagit Valley College
Apr 2017 - Sept 2021Writing Center Consultant/ManagerAs is what you'd hope for a job in education, this position taught me many things. I was recommended for this job by my journalism teacher, based mostly on my grasp of collegiate writing and my interpersonal skills. Day-to-day, I, and my colleagues, would help students develop confidence in their own essay writing practices and help them cultivate proper support skills, such as conducting research or maneuvering group writing projects. But we would also do independent studies and research for continued growth of the Writing Center and our professional selves. This research would be done during downtime, when work days were slow. We would also conduct in class and in center presentations to advertise our services. Other advertising we did, was creating short videos to introduce our consultants to students and faculty alike. I had the most experience editing videos at the time. So I headed up the project. The last 2 years or so I became a Co-manager with a very capable colleague. This added to our plates building schedules and emailing more directly with faculty members of the college. We would also be the ones at the forefront of creating processes, ideas, and eventually rolling out testing for our Writing Center Online system. Being part of developing this was new and challenging for me. But, at project completion, was very rewarding! This job what through many variations and cycles. Adapting to the changes in the environment was a must for success. I greatly appreciate the dedication of my team and director. I met many unique and inspiring people at Skagit Valley College. It was a most formative time of my life. Show less

His Place Community Church
Sept 2018 - Sept 2020Youth Office AssistantThis job was a very unique experience. Getting to see the innerworkings of ministry, mainly youth ministry, was very telling of how important and difficult it can be to maintain safety and discipline within systems and protocols. Before I worked as the Youth Office Assistant (YOA), I worked a summer job at His Place doing Guest Relations. Through this, I was able to gain valuable experience as a receptionist and office worker. Answering and transferring phone calls by navigating the phone system, handling and securing money (tithes and offerings; donations; charity funds), and organizing/updating the filing systems (paper and digital). I did simple data entry as well. Updating congregation members contact information and attendance history, as well as adding new members. After that summer I started my new YOA position. Though I maintained quite a few of my previous responsibilities, I also gain new ones. I would help prepare for and facilitate Youth Group events and gatherings. Such as buying supplies or making reservations at local events, like charity work or baseball games, for our students to grow closer together and to God. This job also allowed me to work, or start projects, from home. This was useful when the pandemic hit in early 2020.Other than trying to keep an ever changing and ever cluttering office space tidy, this job allowed me to grow and cultivate better office practices. Working in ministry is like navigating a maze at times. I hold high respect for those who can create and run effective business/church models. Show less

Walmart
Nov 2020 - Apr 2023Food and Consumables AssociateWorking retail at a small branch of an American megacorporation taught me and showed me the strengths and weaknesses in day-to-day work that I believe are missed and overlooked. Accountability and communication (and the willingness of employees to do so) is greatly important for everyday tasks to be accomplished on time and with minimal problems. As a team, me and the rest of Food and Consumables would work together to schedule our lunch breaks to ensure coverage for our department and beyond. There were many times that I was relied on by the management of the entire store to communicate and plan on their behalf. I was taught and I learned many managerial duties and roles by my superiors and on my own throughout my employment at Wal-mart. I gained a great deal of trust and credit by the associates and managers because of my effective interpersonal skills and customer service. I know that staying positive, thoughtful, and open-minded has served me well in creating lasting relationships with the associates I worked with for 2 years. It also cultivated relationships with consistent customers! I was chosen to represent my store at the Associate Week & Shareholders Celebration. I was flown to Bentonville, Arkansas to participate in large presentations and meetings about the current state and future of the company. Touring the Wal-mart home office and historical sites along the way. I got to see a fun, positive side of the company, as if at were at 100% operation. Unfortunately, the day-to-day at my store, and stores around the U.S., do not reflect the high corporate standards I witnessed in Arkansas. All in all, this was a valuable learning experience. It was eye opening for me. Working at Wal-mart allowed me to see many sides of an American megacorporation. I got to experience fantastic leadership and planning done right. I also saw the exact opposite. I do not deny the mistreatment of associates by customers and other employees. This includes managerial staff. Show less
