  During my internship at Fiat Research Centre (supervisor: Raffaele Ricco) I worked on advanced technologies for internal combustion engines to reduce their emissions.The starting point has been a benchmarking analysis of the current situation, focusing on the environmental issues and legislations related to the Automotive sector. Life Cycle Assessment of vehicles has also been deepened to understand the real impact that hybrid and battery electric vehicles have on CO2 reduction. The final part of the benchmarking analysis has been focused on hydrogen for Automotive applications. This one is the topic upon which my final academic thesis (written in English) has been based. With respect to hydrogen used as fuel in internal combustion engine and Oxy-Hydrogen (HHO), patent research has been carried out too. As a result, a possible configuration to be adopted for the HHO has been found. Then, 3D-CFD simulations with Ansys Forte have been run to assess the impact of hydrogen in internal combustion engines. Simulation results have been post-processed and analysed by means of Excel spreadsheets and of Ansys Workbench. In particular, the goal was understanding the influence of injecting hydrogen and lean combustion on in-cylinder motion and thus on combustion. Furthermore, a brief analysis of the relationship between tolerances and manufacturing costs has been realised considering some of the main components of a fuel system. The writing of the academic thesis has marked the conclusion of the internship. In the end, the experience resulted to be fundamental even on the side of teamwork, since some of the activities have been carried on with other students. Show less
