    • The University of British Columbia

      2023 - 2027
Doctor of Philosophy - PhD Forest & Conservation Sciences

My research aims to inform and improve how we construct, restore, and manage the tidal marsh ecosystems of Pacific Northwest estuaries. This includes studying the biotic (plant traits, herbivory) and abiotic (geomorphology) processes behind marsh succession, and also evaluating juvenile salmonid use of both created and natural marshes. These findings will inform experimental marsh design approaches (materials, species, etc.) and will promote more resilient and salmonid-accessible marshes.

Under the direction of my supervisor Dr. Tara Martin, I investigated the ecological threat of non-native cattail species in the Fraser River Estuary, using a combination of remote sensing, species distribution modelling, and management experiments. During my time at UBC I also worked as a Teaching Assistant in a UFOR 403 Ecological Restoration class taught by Dr. Cindy Prescott, which was attended by both undergraduate and graduate students. • Gardens By Nature Landscape Services

      Sept 2008 - Sept 2010
      Landscape Assistant

Apprenticed in the design and construction of Naturescape gardens (emphasising native and wildlife-friendly plants). Trained to conduct proper tree care and pruning practices, and to diagnose and treat several plant health issues. Tasks included landscape design and construction, removal of invasive plants, planting of native and wildlife-friendly species, and recurring garden maintenance.

    • City of Delta

      May 2011 - Aug 2011
      Invasive Plant Technician

Identified, mapped, and removed invasive plant species in the rural areas, parks, and intertidal mudflats of Delta, BC. Responsibilities included removing invasive plants (i.e., Canada thistle, yellow archangel), performing an extensive invasive plant inventory of agricultural ditches, and assisting Ducks Unlimited Canada staff with the mapping and removal of English cordgrass.

    • Parks Canada

      May 2012 - Aug 2012
      Coastal Naturalist

Designed two interpretive programs that I presented daily over the summer to BC Ferries patrons. Crowds varied in size from 15-200. Presentation topics included the history of the Georgia Basin, and the importance of Garry Oak Ecosystems. Training consisted of an intense, three-week session with Parks Canada staff.

Responsibilities included removing invasive plants (i.e., Canada thistle, yellow iris, English ivy, giant hogweed), designing and implementing a Canada thistle treatment experiment, mapping of Japanese knotweed infestations, and assisting Ducks Unlimited Canada staff with mapping and removal of English cordgrass.

    • Asarum Ecological Consulting

      Apr 2014 - now
      Botanist & Wetland Ecologist

As a self-employed consultant I am involved in several paid and volunteer projects that span the disciplines of conservation biology, ecological restoration, project management, and applied research. Much of my work has occurred in tidal marshes, where I now regularly serve as a technical advisor, consultant, and field biologist with restoration and offset projects. See the Projects section below for details of past and present projects.

    • British Columbia Conservation Foundation

      Jun 2015 - Oct 2016
      Habitat Assessment Scientist

Visited and assessed > 60 tidal marsh and riparian compensation sites in the Fraser River Estuary. Assessments included extensive field mapping, vegetation surveys, and an extensive review of available reports and site documents. Findings were synthesised into two reports (available at the link in my contact info), and were presented at the 2016 Salish Sea Conference.
