      Intership/College Placement

Third Year college placement consisting of Software Development (Java Programming), Testing, Design and Implementation.I was lucky enough to be assigned to a group, just as it began the life cycle of a new product, so I was able to view the creation of the product from design, Coding, Testing, Customer Updating, to the final Implementation and Handover. It was a most pleasant experience, which gave me an invaluable look into the workings of a large Software Development Company. My team became friends for life.I was also lucky enough to be able to study and pass the SCJP 5 and 6 exams, during my stay in IBM. The additional coding experience during my internship helped with passing both exams. I had previously taken and passed the SCJP 1.4 during the summer of 2008 Show less

iVID is a new 4-year research project funded by Science Foundation Ireland to investigate the use of software defined networking (SDN) techniques to optimise the delivery of streaming video.Recent years have seen a dramatic increase in Internet video, which now represents over half of all consumer traffic and is set to reach 69% by 2017. Most video is delivered using the traditional Internet which was designed for an entirely different purpose. In addition, due to its popularity, video traffic is beginning to overload the global internet. These problems can result in poor video quality, or video start-up delays, or frequent pauses. This research will enhance the future Internet, enable high-quality Internet video, and yield costs savings for network operators. The project will leverage software-defined network concepts to create new algorithms and software for intelligent network resource allocation and video processing, resulting in improved quality of experience for viewers. Show less During the Third and Fourth Term of the Second Year of my PostDoc Research, I was an MSc Project Supervisor for "Measuring the Quality of Experience of Streaming Video". I wrote the project outline, designed the testbed requirements, proposed architecture structure, device interaction and proposed the direction the student should take. Duties included bi-weekly meeting with the student, project assistance and guidance. The goal of this Project was to create a create a suite of tools, based on raw video (YUV), DASH or MP4 files and parameterised input values (number of stalls, changes in quality levels, distributions of same, etc), to generate output video files, typically MP4 files, which can be subjectively evaluated, and to conduct some simple subjective evaluation on the generated files.Should be fun.... I wrote the project outline, designed the testbed requirements and proposed the direction the student should take. Duties included weekly meeting with the student, project assistance and guidance. This was my first real CS experience as being the "go to guy", it was my responsibility that the student was given the correct information on which to build the project. If I didn't give 100%, then the quality of the students final thesis could reflect this and marks may be lost.My MSc student was awarded a First Class Honor for his Thesis. Well done Paul... Show less I tutored some of the summer repeat students. My modules included CS2505 - Network Computing and cs2506 - Operating Systems II.Topics in CS2505 included: Networking Basics, Application Layer, Transport Layer and Network Management.Topics in CS2506 included:System Architecture, Process Scheduling & Management, Memory Management, Device Management, File System, RAID and OS & MIDP Security.I find tutoring to be an enjoyable experience as it allows me learn about new topics and I enjoy when a student learns something new.I am happy to update this position and state that all the students that I taught, passed their exams. Well done to one and all. Show less

During Semester 2 of the 2020/21 term, I lectured on the UCC CSIT CS3305 module - Team Software Project. In this module I introduced the student to the themes, principle, and process of Project Management with a specific focus on Software Development. In this module, the 69 students were divided into 14 teams, in which they designed their own project, implemented the architecture and developed the software core. The students produced some amazing projects in such areas as Spotify, Twitter, COVID vaccination, Bitcoin, Stock visualisation, a Games hub, an online Tutor hub, a social media platform for music, a geo-based game about Cork, a web-based election system, a typing app, a COVID compliant trekking app, an e-commerce platform and an employee scheduling application. Show less The MISL Summer of Code (MISL-SOC-20) is a personal outreach initiative in which students from local secondary schools and third level institutions (foreign and domestic) intern in UCC during the summer recess. The goal of the initiative is to provide the students with access to a research lead project, in which they enhance their programming, logistical and development skills. In the third year of the project, we had twenty two students intern during the summer of 2020. (Two from 3rd year Computer Science placement, five from 1st year Computer Science, thirteen from local secondary schools in Cork, and two from University Clermont Auvergne, France.)Of course, all of these twenty two students worked remotely, across a vastest array of projects, including:iOS app developmentAndroid app developmentDart/Flutter developmentImage processing/Facial recognition in OpenCvImage processing/Image removal in mediapipeUnity GamingUnRealEngine GamingWeb GamingURL validation tool in GOLANG, JAVA and PythonAs always, the students continue to amaze me :) Show less During the 2019/20 Semester I supervised 8 Final Year Projects (FYP). These are both projects I proposed as well as student proposed projects which they wanted me to lead. The projects included topics such as:Android Comic Front endAndroid Comic Backend server using RESTful Python and Quart8-bit platformer gaming in GODOT8-bit multi-level gaming in PyGameVisualising Distributed Tracing using DapperWeb Based Statistics using Laravel and TailWindCSSUsing NLP to improve college timetables using Alexa SkillsCooperative Video Clients using GOLANG, GRPC and godash (recently published)Congrats to all the students for some amazing projects... The goal of the initiative is to provide the students with access to a research lead project, in which they enhance their programming, logistical and development skills. In the second year of the project, we had five students intern during the summer of 2019. (Three from local secondary schools in Cork, one from first year in Delft University of Technology, The Netherlands and one from University Clermont Auvergne, France.)They focused on designing and developing a new headless DASH adaptive video player (written in the Google Go Language), as well as areas such as VR/AR, Network Simulation, 5G networking, and Security. It's amazing what you can do, when you love what you do :) Show less In the second semester of the 2018/19 college year, I presented the "Workplace Technology and Skills" module for third year CS undergraduate students (CS3306). The focus for this module is to equip the students for industry placement. This not only means providing lectures on development/coding skills they may need but to also offer support and guidance as they move to what is possibly their first job, if not their first software development environment. I utilised staff from the career guidance and student wellbeing departments in UCC to offer workshops on communication/presentation skills and mindfulness meditation. I forged links to industry when I invited three companies (teamwork.ie, McAfee and Johnson Controls) to give a presentation. The industry presentations covered not only what the company expects of the student but also what the students can expect from the company. Two of my undergraduate Final Year Project students gave presentations on their industry placement the previous year, which gave the students a sense of what they could expect in the coming months. As these third-year students are already well versed in the concepts and principles of software development, I focused on new coding languages. Migration to industry will typically mandate learning a new coding language, which can be stressful especially for interns. The ten coding languages I offered to the students were:C#, R, Typescript, Kotlin, F#, Apple Swift, Rust, Nim, Julia, ScalaEach student could select the language the wanted to learn. Once all students had selected their languages, they were allocated to teams and within the lab the teams sat together. This mandated that students work together and if a student had an issue, then the team were there to support them. This provided to be very beneficial to the students, as it replicated a real software development environment (where asking question is sometimes the only way to learn about a specific concept) Show less The MISL Summer of Code is a personal outreach initiative in which students from local secondary schools and third level institutions (foreign and domestic) intern in UCC during the summer recess.
