Karla conducted protocol surveys for state listed Mohave ground squirrels in several military bases including China Lake, Fort Irwin and Marine Corps logistics base. Surveys involved live-trapping squirrels, taking biometric measurements and pit tagging individuals. In addition, Karla conducted several vegetation surveys to determine associations between trap locations and vegetation. Karla also used Reconyx infrared cameras and seed trays to determine presence-absence of Mohave ground squirrels in areas not suitable for trapping. Show less

    • U.S. Forest Service

      Jun 2008 - Aug 2008
      Small mammal field assistant

Karla used standard live trapping techniques to conduct small mammal surveys in upland and riparian sites within the pumice plain of Mt St Helens. Surveys were part of a succession study used to quantify changes in the abundance of small mammals following the 1980 volcanic eruption. Biometric measurements for all rodents trapped were taken and all individuals trapped were ear tagged. Assisted with bird point counts and fish surveys. Collected data on plant parasitoid interactions as pertained to willow and boll-weevils. Show less

    • Oregon State University

      Sept 2008 - Dec 2008
      Small mammal research technician

Conducted small mammal surveys in the HJ Andrews Experimental forest as part of a study investigating the effects of tree thinning on old growth forests. Surveys included live-trapping small mammals in experimentally thinned forest stands. Species trapped included northern flying squirrels, Townsends chipmunks, spotted skunks, deer mice, red-backed voles, ermines and several species of shrew. Karla took biometric measurements of all mammals trapped and ear tagged all individuals.

Karla performed compliance monitoring during road reclamation activities on segment one and two of the Tehachapi renewable transmission project (TRTP). This included effective communication with construction crews, meticulous observation of crew activities and thorough understanding of the environmental impact report and variances. Karla also monitored active raptor nests and conducted nest searches.

      Teaching Associate

Taught BIOL 274L: Principles of Ecology and Physiology. Designed interactive lesson plans that explore the role of statistics in ecology. Designed activities aimed at improving student's scientific writing skills. Lead field trips to desert and intertidal areas. Assisted in the development of student experiments from hypothesis development to experimental design to data analysis.

    • Colorado State University

      May 2011 - Aug 2011

Karla set up 20 100x100 grids with a handheld GPS for live trapping of northern grasshopper mice, Onychomys leucogaster, in the Pawnee National Grasslands (PNG) as part of her graduate research on the population genetics of grasshopper mice. Karla obtained biometric measurements of all rodents trapped, obtained ear tissue samples for genetic analyses and ear tagged target and non-target species as part of a larger on-going grassland ecology study. Incidental by-catch included: kangaroo rats (Dipodomys ordii), ground squirrels (Spermophilus tridecilineatus), deer mice (Peromyscus maniculatus) and harvest mice (Reithrodontomys sp.). Show less
