      Laboratory Technician

As a Laboratory Technician in Forensic Chemistry, I have a dual role: I assist in the planning and organization of the Forensic Analytical Toxicology, Chemistry, Identification, and Physical Evidence & Microscopy undergraduate labs, as well as Chemistry undergraduate labs. I am responsible for 1st year introductory chemistry; 2nd year inorganic, organic and physical chemistry labs; 3rd year forensic chemistry, forensic identification, and advanced forensic identification labs; and 4th year forensic analytical toxicology and forensic identification field school. These responsibilities include maintaining all glassware used, complex set-ups, ensuring the inventory of chemicals required for these labs is maintained, and ensuring the safety of everyone in the lab. In addition, I have proficiency with complex chemistry lab instruments: such as FTIR, HPLC, ICP-AES, GC/LC-MS, Microscopy (confocal, PLM, stereo, SEM-EDX), NMR, UV-Vis, and associated software. The 3rd year Forensic and Advanced Forensic Identification labs require a more specialized skill set. My responsibilities includes setting up all equipment used in laboratory and/or the Forensic Science Crime Scene House teaching facility, e.g. Nikon D-70 camera and accessories; cyanoacrylate fuming chamber; fingerprint identification kits - various powders, brushes, scales, etc.; forensic alternate light sources; mock crime scene staging. These various set-ups require high degree of understanding the experiment procedure and application of their use within forensic identification techniques/procedures. Show less
