    • Christian Prison Ministry of Missouri

      Jun 1999 - Jun 2000
      Corrections Counselor

I served as an assistant to the Executive Director and Prison Chaplain, Doug Dorris through a paid internship. I helped lead Religious Studies and worship services inside the Jefferson City Correctional Center working with level 4 and 5 offenders. These are those convicted of the most serious crimes imaginable. We also participated in small group Religious Studies and one-on-one counseling inside the walls. Additionally, I served as the half-way house manager for a home where we housed recently released inmates. I taught them how to use social services, apply for jobs, and even how to cook and where to get presentable clothing as some of them had served quite long sentences. Our goal was to reduce recidivism rates and help these men reintegrate into normal society. I assisted them in filling out job applications and writing resumes, as well as enforcing house rules (no drugs, alcohol, female guests without supervision). It was a challenging and rewarding position as we saw some men fail to transition and return to criminal activity, but also as we saw a great deal of success proving that people can change. And a felony conviction does not have to mean remaining in a life of crime for the rest of one's life. Show less
