      High Honors Award The Jackson School of International Studies Jun 2016 I argue that the removal of "race" from French legislation in May 2013 may be understood as historically informed by a schism between Catholic and national collective identity that occurred in fifteenth-century France as a result of the demotion of religion as a framework for collective self-fashioning, a displacement that was incurred with the deification of royal-then-Republican authority.
