    • Anthem, Inc (formerly WellPoint, Inc.)

      Jul 1995 - Jan 2010
Managing Associate General Counsel (last position at Anthem, Inc.)

My time at Anthem, Inc. (Anthem) was marked by transition, growth, and promotion. By leveraging a culture that fosters recognition for hard work and excellent results, I gained the respect of supervisors and served as a role model for colleagues. TRANSITIONWhile employed by the Missouri Department of Insurance (MDI) I served as an effective bodyguard for consumers (i.e., investigating insurance fraud, and conducting market conduct examinations of insurers). Then, I transitioned from the public world at the MDI to the private sector at Anthem. Anthem quickly recognized the experience gleaned from MDI in my role as Examiner-in-Charge of a Market Conduct team was invaluable due to the recent increase in insurer examinations. While at Anthem, my market conduct experience paid off. I vigorously represented the company’s interests and successfully negotiated greatly reduced penalties related to market conduct examinations conducted by MDI. GROWTH By adopting a growth mindset and proactively utilizing the Anthem environment I was able to bolster my industry knowledge and leadership skills by successfully completing America’s Health Insurance Plans (AHIP) Executive Leadership Program. The experience allowed for learning from handpicked mentors and an intense teambuilding opportunity. I was also selected to complete Heidrick & Struggles’ Culture Shaping Program and became a culture facilitator directly responsible for teaching our employees the concepts needed to create a culture that supports and accelerates business performance and personal accountability. PROMOTIONAt the end of the day, leaders have two paths -- they can step forward into growth, or step backward into safety. By stepping forward and embracing some of the most challenging, complex, real-life experiences, I earned promotions from Senior Counsel to Associate General Counsel and eventually served as Managing Associate General Counsel. • Passport Health Plan

      Mar 2011 - Sept 2020
Vice President and Chief Compliance Officer, Risk Management Leader, and Privacy Officer

At the beginning of my tenure as Vice President and Chief Compliance Officer at Passport Health Plan, I was tasked with forming and implementing a compliance department, including determining its goals, objectives and vision for the future. My initial investigation and review of legal and compliance processes and procedures involved a laborious process. I literally personally visited each department at Passport to meet with employees in order to ensure the company had contracts for its vendor relationships and that the contracts were signed by both parties. I also inventoried all policies and checked the process and procedures explained in the policies for content and clarity.Key areas of investigation and review focused on legal and contractual obligations, vendor relationships, risk and control management as well as ongoing policy development and annual reviews.By developing a policy and compliance framework, and after justifying the purchase of a “Compliance 360” technology solution, the team was able to quickly:- Maintain a continuous state of readiness for audits, surveys, and examinations;- Streamline and direct internal audits into areas of highest risk;- Manage, store, retrieve, and report on contracts and policies;- Enforce standards and consistency throughout the company;- Increase accountability and management visibility; and- Support centralized and distributed management structures for optimal efficiency and control.I look back with great pride on my accomplishments and the accomplishments of our entire team. Over time, the Compliance Department grew from 4 employees to a staff of 22 extremely talented compliance professionals, which consisted of attorneys, compliance directors, managers, and analysts all organized into 4 divisions -- Medicaid, Medicare Advantage, Delegation Oversight, and Regulatory Affairs. We achieved the vision and mission of our health plan and wellness for the members we served. Vis mindre

    • Sunflower State Health Plan, Inc.

      Jan 2020 - Jul 2021
      Vice President, Compliance Officer

At Sunflower Health Plan, I made a remarkable positive impact leading two cultural enhancement projects -- the Centene Values Presentations and the Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion (DEI) Strategic Initiative. In most companies, it is unclear who really bears the responsibility for culture, although intuitively, most employees understand that all employees are responsible for the culture. As the VP, Compliance Officer, I already shape the culture by ensuring the company complies with the law, acts in an ethical manner, and identifies and mitigates risk.By viewing operations through the prism of core values, I proactively developed and communicated to all Sunflower employees six targeted presentations on the Centene core values. With regard to the Value Presentations, I focused on re-introducing and explaining the Centene Values to all Sunflower employees and then worked with management to educate, embrace, and institute best practices related to the values. For example, with regard to the value Candid Communication, we emphasized that we should share information with each other rather than be a “knowledge hoarder.”While serving as the co-chair of the DEI Council, I championed diversity, equity, and inclusion which inspired Sunflower employees to recognize and reach their full potential. This also empowered Sunflower employees to fuel diversity, equity, and inclusion innovation across all Sunflower’s members, providers, and the communities Sunflower serves. Along with my co-chair, we led the effort for the DEI Council to develop strategies and implement methodologies for employees to learn more about diverse groups, celebrate diversity months, and express their commitment to representing and reflecting their unique experiences, perspectives, and viewpoints. All members of the DEI Council worked hard to achieve a diverse and inclusive workforce and workplace by building leadership capability and organizational capacity. Vis mindre

    • Community Behavioral Health

      Apr 2022 - Sept 2023
      General Counsel

As the General Counsel of Community Behavioral Health (CBH), I dedicated my service to supporting CBH’s efforts to provide access to mental health care to Medicaid recipients located in Philadelphia County. Simply put, access to mental health care will not only improve health outcomes related to chronic diseases such as diabetes and heart disease, access to mental health care will also improve people’s ability to contribute to their communities, avoid poverty, and live well.In case you haven’t noticed, the world is changing. In this ever-changing world, if you want to increase revenue, cut costs, and use risk to drive business, you need new strategies for your legal, compliance, risk management, and HIPAA Privacy teams and programs. Do you have an organizational/departmental advancement strategy (build and improve), a brand enhancement strategy (internal client focus and education/training), and/or a culture cultivation strategy (engagement and collaboration)?
