  Hospital Chaplain

  During Clinical Pastoral Education over a 9 month period I served at the world renowned Peter McCallum Cancer Institute as a Hospital Chaplain.This involved extensive CPE course work and being part of the Patient Care Team on 2 wards and taking my turn on a weekly roster and weekend roster as the only Chaplain responsible for the entire Pastoral Care after hours and weekends. I also was offered and took up the opportunity to serve at the world renowned Royal Children's Hospital as Chaplain on the Orthopaedic and Neurological Wards.It was in both Hospitals, I was the first in Australia to Pioneer Puppet Therapy to assist children with their hospitalisations. This involved the use of mostly hand puppets that would introduce themselves to the child in front of parents and chat about how they were feeling regarding all the tests, needles, etc.This led to some amazing revelations about how children were feeling, what scared them, and this was fed back to Patient Care Teams...Often a Specialist or Ward Doctor would specifically ask me to visit particular patients they had just seen!This Pioneering Puppet Therapy all happened before Music Rooms, Clown Doctors etcA 22 hour day as Hospital Chaplain, transformed my life personally and professionally, as 4 people were dying.One Married Italian woman, "Palmina", who I had journeyed with for 3 months, asked me to be with her & her husband, when she died...This was a great honour to be asked...That experience and Ministering to the other 3, their families and Nursing Staff, all day and night, leaving the Hospital 4am, had 2 hours sleep, then at 8.30am was Giving My Report, to a room full of Peers in a State of Shock...For 4 Died Thursday pm or Friday am, and I had to Pastorally Manage all the Significant LifeChanging Events of 4 People, 4 Distressed Family Groupings, 4 Groups of Nursing Staff, will be something I will never forget.CPE was a turning point in my life both personally and professionally.   Department Head Volunteers

  I was recruited to become Department Head of Wesley Mission's Huge Volunteer Workforce.Upon arrival Rev Dr Gordon Moyes CEO and Superintendent wrote in his famous ink pen, that "Colin, you will be recruiting more volunteers than in the entire history of Wesley Mission."Over the next 3 years, due to a phenomenal growth phase Wesley Mission embarked upon, over 1,000 volunteers became 2,500 volunteers.I was totally responsible for the Carry of this huge Volunteer Workforce and was magnificently assisted on a daily basis by various staff and volunteers working and serving in the 110 Caring Centres, Services and Ministries.I immersed myself in the recruitment, interviewing, deployment, follow up, encouragement, pastoral care, counselling, training, equipping and recognition of volunteers.I continued to develop my Budget Control expertise and always came in on or under budget.I was also responsible for developing excellent interpersonal relationships with Centre Managers and Staff looking after volunteers on a daily basis.I creatively helped Centre Managers see the possibilities and value of volunteers and instituted a Volunteer Job Description Form.I was responsible for the Annual Volunteer Recognition Lunches, Dinners and Awards.Due to the interest in the outstanding care Wesley Mission provided to so many, I also had a good working relationship with Government Ministers; and would invite some to come and speak at various functions associated with Volunteering.As a Culture Creator, I initially sensed a reluctance amongst some Senior Staff to be part of the regular Volunteer Orientation Program. So, I instituted the idea of having a Joint Staff and Volunteer Orientation Program, which still runs today. This saved extensively on staff time, travelling, and changed the entire Culture of all staff towards volunteers; which spread throughout Wesley Mission.I combined this position with SFC Australia...   I was part of the second intake recruited for the new National Enquiry Centre...I took over 100 calls per day and was the best performer in my intake and one of the top 3 performers in the Call Centre.My responsibilities include answering calls from men and women going through the process of divorce, solicitors and the general public.I really loved my time here in this position and had an excellent relationship with the Call Centre Manager.I took opportunities to assist the Family Court Sydney when short staffed due to illness or holidays.I also had opportunities to service clients and the public face to face on the Customer Service Counter downstairs at Parramatta.I combined this position with SFC Australia...
