      ERT members receive specialist training which equip them with the skills to effectively manage high-risk/high-needs detainees through early identification and prevention. ERT members are also trained to apply approved control and restraint methods and conduct specialist security and tactical tasks. As a DSO my role is responsible for ensuring the security and safety of detainees from diverse backgrounds whilst their Immigration pathway is being determined. Key accountabilities include maintaining the good order and security of the Centre, emergency response and incident management.

      As a member of the Acacia Prison Correctional Emergency Response Team (CERT) I am one of a group of Officers trained to respond to various incidents that cannot be contained by the normal staffing compliment or require an additional security presence and tactical decision making. Upskilled in a range of areas including, Advanced Defence and Equipment Tactical Training (ISR/ DETT), Disorder Management, Fire Response, Less than Lethal Weapons Training, Close Quarters Tactics and Method of Entry tactical breaching equipment.As part of my role within the CERT Team I am trained to (have):- Thorough understanding of Use of force, Legislation, Acts & Policy Directives. - A familiarisation of AIIMS and MIMMS with prison and state-wide application.- Thorough understanding of Acacia Prison’s Emergence Management Plans.- An increased knowledge, skill and technique in DETT, ISR and Cell Extractions.- Maintain competency in use of First Aid protocol and Use of Force Tactics and decision making,- Equipment proficiency including Avon Respirator, Compressed Air Breathing Apparatus and first attack fire interventions.- A thorough understanding of equipment auditing and servicing protocols.       As an A/Operations Manager at Acacia Prison, I have been responsible for running the daily regime of the prison and/or residential areas within the prison. Charged to oversee the development and delivery of services, security, management of over 100 correctional staff as well as engaging with a range of internal and external stakeholders to ensure the regular operation of the prison.The role of the Operations Manager is diverse and extremely complex, with a range of moving parts requiring sound organization, planning and leadership. The Operations Manager provides guidance and direction to a number of Senior Officers/Unit Managers to ensure they are empowered to run their units and Officers alike. The Operations Manager reports to the Senior Management Team on the daily running of the prison and acts as Officer in Command for the first response to a range of emergencies that face the prison. Show less Elected an HSR I underwent the five-day training providing the fundamentals of Work Health and Safety and the roles of the HSR, PCBU and the supporting legislation to ensure a safe workplace environment. As a HSR I had the important role in representing members of my work group and bringing issues to the attention of the PCBU relating to WHS matters, monitoring compliance to the act and regulations, conduct investigations where necessary in to WHS complaints and unsafe practices and where necessary review or issue provisional improvement notices to ensure future compliance. Show less As a CERT Team Leader, I provided Tactical Command for the team tasked to restore order and security to the prison through a range of incidents that may occur. In additional to incident resolution, I provide work skill instruction, training and guidance to CERT members on riotous behaviour and tactical incident management, as well as the development of SOP and tactical planning and deployment doctrine for planned and unplanned operations. Key responsibilities include:- Understand the incident command structure, functional roles, responsibilities, requirements, and capabilities (including gaps).- Determine whether the situation merits the activation of a strategic level of co-ordination and recommend accordingly.- Establish and maintain shared situational awareness and promote effective decision making.- Regularly assess and disseminate the information and intelligence available, to evaluate threats, hazards, vulnerabilities, and actions within incidents.- Understand how ever-changing threats and hazards affect the prison, and work with operational managers and senior management to conduct joint dynamic risk assessments, putting in place appropriate mitigation and management arrangements to continually monitor and respond to the changing nature of emergencies for the prison.- Ensure that all tactical decisions made, and the rationale behind them, are documented ensuring that a clear audit trail exists for all debriefs and future learning. Show less As a Unit Manager at Acacia Prison, I am responsible for the day to day operational and administrative management of my accommodation area, the deployment and supervision of Prison Officers ensuring policies, operating procedures and rules are followed, reporting and compliance measures are maintained and ensuring the good order and security of my area is maintained, as part of the secure operations of the prison.My Duties include:- Management and Leadership of Custodial team and the primary contact source and decision maker for my residential block.- Manage the requirements associated to a residential accommodation unit of nearly 200 prisoners. - Support the identification, development and implementation of innovations and practices to support the rehabilitation and reintegration of prisoners.- Reporting to the Operations Manager or Assistant Director on operational concerns, Ensuring the safe and secure operation of the prison.- Ensure compliance and the good order, good government, and security of the prison is maintained. Show less As the CERT Commander I lead the 40 strong team of volunteer/ part time Correctional Emergency Response Officers, through strategic overview and planning, operational capability and performance reviews and targeted development of resources, equipment, and policies. The CERT Commander is the highest rank within the Correctional Emergency Response Team. As the CERT Commander I provided Strategic command, Tactical Leadership Training, and overwatch for Critical incidents that required the specialist response from the CERT to maintain the good order, good government and security of the prison and its community. In this pivotal role for critical incident response, I was accomplished in revitalising stakeholder relationships with internal and external agencies to improve mutual aid and support. As WA’s largest prison the requirement to have functioning relationships for support was critical and proved evident through one of the largest incidents the prison has seen, in February 2022. Through this role I have managed a range of critical incidents utilising, Emergency Management Framework, Commissioners Operating Policies and Procedures, local Standing orders (including the development of new Standing Orders relative to the CERT) and trained as a Level 2 Australian Inter-agency Incident Management System (AIIMS) Controller.
