      Mechanical Engineering Co-op

During my only rotation with Bunting Graphics, Inc, I worked mainly with Solidworks to model sign components and assemblies. In order for me to accurately portray and create models and drawings I interacted with engineers, technical managers, project managers, and suppliers. This rotation allowed me to step out of my comfort zone and build my interpersonal skills which are a necessary skill for an engineer in an industry. While in this rotation, I had the opportunity to witness all parts of a project including, but not limited to, the initial planning including proposals and quotes, the design to meet the customers needs, the planning for manufacture of the product, the manufacturing process, the final installation/delivery of the product to the customer, and the support to the customer once the product is delivered. I completed four separate rotations with Curtiss-Wright EMD. In those four rotations, I played multiple roles, absorbed not only technical information, but also business acumen for engineers, and established my integrity amongst the people I worked with company-wide.During my first rotation, I worked in the Supply Chain Management Group where I learned the higher level of business, which eventually allowed me to, as an engineer, make more educated decisions with not only understanding the necessary technical justification, but also the status and welfare of the project. I also had the opportunity to sit in on an 8 week long training for design analysis for a commercial nuclear pump. During my second rotation, I worked in the Pump Design Engineering Group where I worked closely with higher level engineers and analysts to design, analyze, and test components in nuclear reactor coolant pumps. During this rotation, I received multiple different trainings, which aided in the expansion of my engineering knowledge in this industry. While working in this group, I had the opportunity to work closely with computer software like Solid Edge, ANSYS, Mathcad, AutoCad, and many others to analyze and test components to verify their design.During my third rotation, I worked in the Generator & Motor Design and Production Group where I worked with other engineers, machinists, inspectors, and suppliers to support current projects progressing through the manufacturing shop and to support the planning and design of future products for different projects and product lines. The close interaction with the manufacturing aspect of the business helped to solidify my understanding of machines and processes of the manufacturing aspect of a project.During my fourth rotation, which was a part-time rotation, I worked in the Dynamic Analysis Group where I worked with an in-house program similar to ANSYS to model and analyze a commercial nuclear pump. Directly managed 8+ project design engineers and coordinated the technical aspects for the design and manufacture of over 9 existing product lines and the development of several new product lines. Increased engineering staff’s operating efficiency by providing structure, clear and concise operating procedures, engineering tools, guidelines, and support where necessary. Worked to develop the engineering workforce through training plan coordination and skill evaluations of direct reports.Maintained detailed and high-level project schedules and continuously evaluate opportunities for schedule and processing improvement in parallel with ongoing work. Led multi-discipline engineering teams through various product life cycle stages in order to allow the various teams to meet customer schedules, perform in accordance with technical and quality contractual requirements, and support business financial objectives. Identified and performed design and/or process improvements and cost reduction activities resulting in project cost savings and schedule accelerations. Show less Supported manufacturing efforts through procedural design, various types of analysis, manufacture, verification of the product through electrical and functional testing, and finally to shipment of finished product. Developed detailed design plans for components for ease of manufacture and maintained design intent by implementing repairs of parts as problems arise within the manufacturing environment. Reviewed customer contract specifications and translated to develop work scopes for internal use and for requirements flow down to suppliers. Show less
