    • Fiorello h. laguardia high school

      Jan 2020 - Jun 2022

Baiwen found extraordinary interest in discrete math and number theory after taking the class in her senior year. It soon became her favourite course, hence, she decided to create the math club "Irrational Logic" with her teacher to provide a space where math enthusiasts could gather every Friday to dive into deeper topics in the subject and solve fun yet challenging math problems together. Toward the end of the year, the teacher was able to cover extended topics such as introductory Linear Algebra through the club. Show less Baiwen started this paper along with four motivated students who understand the struggles of the freshmen class, especially during COVID because they started high school on Zoom. Without proper guidance and support, it’s hard to even imagine how overwhelming and worrying the experience would be. Thus, she decided to create this Freshmen Newsletter that includes important information all in one place and interviewed 30+ teachers and upperclassmen to provide insightful views and advice. This way, incoming freshmen and rising sophomores can adapt to the school quicker, thus having more time to relax and enjoy their time at LaGuardia. Show less

The Junior State of America believes leadership is a skill that can be learned and nurtured through instruction, self-reflection, and practice. At the Young Women’s Leadership Institute (YWLI), students will learn about the history of women’s leadership in the United States and understand the opportunities they have to be leaders in their communities. As a WOC and a "minority" at my school - a STEMinist at an art school - this program was empowering; I learned about different leadership styles and how to become a better leader on different levels. I am incredibly grateful for our guest speakers. Some of them became my biggest inspiration and aspiration at the time, which encouraged me to have more self-reflection and endowed me with direct experience in community organizing and action planning.
