Planned Parenthood of Orange & San Bernardino Counties (PPOSBC) is a nonprofit organization with eight clinics focusing on women's reproductive health, three Women's Infant Children (WIC) locations, and various robust health education grants. In addition they have a Political Action Fund (PAC) and a Community Action Fund (CAC).I started working for PPOSBC during a transitional time in the accounting department. Which resulted in minimal training. Management was concerned that transactions were not being posted in a consistent manner. I jumped into the general ledger and started reconciling the balance sheet accounts, posting reclassifying entries as necessary and putting in place missing procedures. For example, they had no way of knowing how much money a grantor actually owed them; I set up grants receivable and deferred revenue accounts to track amounts due. Cash flow improved substantially due to this simple change. All balance sheet accounts were reconciled, with one exception (A/R) in time for the annual audit.Accounts receivable was not easily reconciled; the general ledger had never agreed with the A/R aging in the past. The billing software was home-grown and did not interface with the general ledger software. I spearheaded a team that included myself, the billing manager and IT; together we figured out what the issues were and corrected them. We were then able to recognize revenue in the proper period; this had a huge impact with senior management who were now able to make decisions based on accurate past data.Another challenge I faced at PPOSBC: there was no internal specialist regarding the legal and tax rules surrounding the CAF and PAC. Each entity needed its own set of books and records; which it did not have I learned everything I could about about PAC & CAF's, created policies and procedures to be followed and set them up in QuickBooks.I took a family leave that ran longer than expected; hence there was no job for me to return to.
