University of the Sunshine Coast
Feb 2013 - Nov 2023Sessional AcademicEight years teaching creative writing across all undergraduate levels in a range of genres, including creative nonfiction, short story, literary and genre fiction, and editing and publishing. This role includes preparing and delivering lessons according to course curriculum and learning outcomes, engaging students by facilitating a friendly and safe learning environment, being available for in-person consultation or online assistance, monitoring student attendance and progress, being familiar with university policy to ensure high retention rates and course outcomes, grading student work and providing them with useful feedback, and moderating grading with colleagues. I also develop short courses for the continuing education program, including 'Writing Nonfiction: From Planning to Publishing'. When designing curriculum, I practice constructive alignment and backward design, first considering the purpose of the course then the intended learning outcomes and how best to achieve these through a combination of formative and summative assessment as well as technology-enhanced learning. I believe that teaching writing requires scholarly and evidence-informed approaches that stimulate creativity and experimentation. My goal is to motivate growth in my students and to nurture future creative arts practitioners, published authors, and writing and publishing industry professionals. Show less

Hachette Australia Books
Nov 2017 - nowAuthorAuthor of 'Carpathia: The Extraordinary Story of the Ship that Rescued the Survivors of the Titanic', a creative nonfiction book published by Hachette Australia and available internationally. Carpathia sold over 5,000 copies domestically, making it a bestseller by Australian standards. During release month, it was Dymocks’ third highest-selling history title nationally. Critics reviewed it positively, with Phil Brown from The Courier Mail saying Carpathia is ‘captivating and well researched’ while Mercedes Maguire from The Daily Telegraph wrote ‘this book, written and meticulously researched by the Sunshine Coast academic, will be enjoyed by a much wider audience. The reason is Ludowyke’s charming way of breathing life into the scenes she writes about and the characters who form the focus of her narrative’. After publication, I was interviewed on the morning television show Studio 10 and featured in an episode of the nationally acclaimed ABC Conversations. I have been a guest on the United Kingdom’s The Mariner’s Mirror (‘the world’s No.1 podcast dedicated to all of maritime and naval history’) and was an invited speaker of the Australian National Maritime Museum and the Titanic Memorial Lighthouse, New York.
