Also provided basic community outreach to help facilitate more equitable interaction between the State of Idaho and the locals affected by the Department of Lands policies and decisions. This required the ability to think, act, work, and coordinate with others, either as a representative of the Department, or as an individual under significant stress.

    • Ambulance Services

      May 1987 - Mar 1991
      EMT A/D

EMT A/D : Emergency Medical Technician - Ambulance/Defibrillation In rural Idaho, access to more highly qualified Paramedics is not always an easy task, so certain EMT's obtain as much additional training as humanly possible. Defibrillation is an extremely useful technology when you are faced with having to perform CPR on an individual until you are too exhausted to continue and no one else is available to relieve you.I worked for several Ambulance Services and a Quick Response Unit. A typical day?: Work 12 hours on Rescue One (QRU) in Meridian, Idaho. Drive an hour, then work a 10 hour shift for United Ambulance in Payette, Idaho (UA). Drive back an hour, then serve 24 hour shift on QRU. Turn around, drive an hour back to work another 24 hours for UA. After being awake for well over 72 hours, drive home. While stopped at the Post Office, another EMT from Horseshoe Bend (HSB), Idaho, would ask me to hold onto the radio while they run into Boise. When I finally get home, I'm too tired to sleep, and start looking at the mail, when a knock comes to my door. It is the neighbor's 8 year-old boy: "Gary, can you come look at my brother? He wrecked our sled and his shoulder hurts really bad!!!"After a quick assessment: "Boise Dispatch this is Horseshoe Bend Portable Number...? I don't know the number, but please have the Ambulance respond to my house [again]. Patient is a 12 year-old male with a fractured clavicle. Conscious and breathing..."That was a "typical day" for me... Show less

      Student & Tutor

Provide alternatives to traditional tutoring for English and all Social Sciences at City College of San Francisco. Also via the internet with students in the Philippines, Vietnam, South Africa, Greece, France, Columbia, Chile, Brazil, and other locales. Most of all I have learned that Time Zones are not my friend! When I'm dead on my feet, and am running on less than 2 hours sleep each night, I will still respond to any student who seeks assistance as quickly as humanly possible. Even with almost no sleep this semester, I was capable of achieving almost straight A's (15 credits @ A; 3 @ B; and 1 either A or B...) Show less
