      Deck Officer Cadet

      Supplemented shoreside training serving twelve months on board three post-Panamax container vessels. Ship board training followed the MNTB framework and required the completion of the MNTB Training Record Book. Evidence of training tasks completed are documented in a Navigation and Operations Workbook. The workbook contains reports compiled to a commended standard and allowed me to demonstrate my expanding knowledge of ship board operations. My required sea service was fulfilled on board the following container vessels:• MV Ever Shine, 75,246 GT, 4 months, 19 days,• MV Ever Leading, 98,882 GT, 4 months, 28 days,• MV Ever Lasting, 98,882 GT, 2 months, 22 days.Serving on each afforded me the opportunity to experience commercial shipping on a vast, worldwide scale with the vessels traversing mainly Euro-Asian routes. On each vessel I acted as understudy to the OOW. I was entrusted with and handed responsibility in areas including: • keeping a safe navigational watch,• voyage planning,• upkeep and updating of navigational charts,• cargo watch and operations,• ballasting,• steering,• pilotage,• mooring,• anchoring,• LSA/FFA equipment inspection.This allowed me to develop the confidence and skills required of a motivated and competent officer. I was also able to experience working alongside entirely foreign crews and benefited from understanding the importance of teamwork, communication and leadership in the modern world of merchant shipping.
