Associate, Senior Environmental Design Analyst - CFD Specialist at Foster + Partners

  • Education

    • Università degli Studi di Roma Tre

      2007 - 2011
      Bachelor's degree Mechanical Engineering

Activities and Societies: Student’s spokesman at the Faculty Council and the Student’s Council. Thesis: “Numerical simulation on a vertical axis wind turbine”. Static 2D numerical simulations were made in order to evaluate the lift, drag and moment coefficient of a profile of a vertical axis wind turbine designed at University of “Roma Tre”, in order to compare its performance with other turbine profiles.

Thesis: “Reduction of Landing Gear Noise Using Air Curtains”. The work considered the innovative use of an air curtain concept to reduce landing gear noise. It was proposed that a planar jet acting as an air curtain can shield the noisy components of landing gears, with minimal additional parts and weight. The aerodynamic noise reduction of the landing gear was found to be large enough to compensate for the additional noise created by the air curtain itself. Many types of air curtain nozzles were tested (2 single and 2 double air curtains) and the objective was to measure and compare the results in order to develop a novel air curtain nozzle that effectively shields the noise efficiently. My research developed new experimental and numerical modelling techniques to characterise aircraft landing gear noise and to evaluate different technical solutions for noise reduction.I worked in the Fluids, Vibration & Acoustic’s Group in Trinity Collegeand I was a funded research participant in a European Clean Sky Project called ALLEGRA (Advanced low noise landing (main and nose) gear for regional aircraft). This project tests half scale main landing gear and full-scale nose landing gear using different low noise techniques in the Pininfarina aeroacoustic facility wind tunnel in Turin, Italy. My skills include coding proficiency (e.g. Matlab) and acoustic experimental techniques, such as signal processing, beamforming analysis, spectral analysis and measurement techniques. In 2016 I trained in beamforming analysis at the DLR German Aerospace Centre.During my graduate research, I have been proactively working towards and preparing for an industrial role, including taking part in the PEP-Up ‘Fit For Industry’ workshop for doctoral candidates in INSA-Lyon. • B-Fluid Ltd

      Apr 2018 - Mar 2021
      Aerodynamics Engineer

I was part of a team which investigates the behavior of fluid flows in and around buildings, aircraft and wind turbines. My job combined aero/fluid-mechanics knowledge with experimental data analysis and advanced CFD numerical modelling and provided a comprehensive and integrated service to enable designers to account for all physical phenomena generated by the interaction of fluid flows with the built environment. The final goal was to make fluid flow phenomena predictable and controllable and to implement this knowledge in the design of buildings, aircraft, wind turbines and associated systems, in order to deliver innovative and practical fluid dynamics solutions to clients.Responsibilities:- Perform and coordinate CFD studies, wind tunnel tests and on-site measurements- Manage multiple complex, multi-disciplinary projects and support business development- Interface with clients through the entire project lifecycle- Prepare and check reports and fee proposals- Identify risks and agree on project stages- Liaise with local authorities, town planners and stakeholders- Work to tight deadlines, certification standards, and budget limitations- Work on-site with the construction management teamsCFD Numerical Analysis:*Wind impact studies*Airflow simulations for thermal comfort - HVAC assessment in buildings*Modelling of fire and smoke movement for SVS design and verification*Modelling of data centre thermal conditions*Jet impulse fan system simulations for car parks and tunnels*Thermal analysis of double skins façade*Numerical modelling of façade whistling (i.e. tonal noise)*Urban and building aeroacoustics analysis*Aircraft and wind turbine aerodynamic noise assessmentExperimental Tests:*Aeroacoustics testing*Wind tunnel testing*On-site full-scale smoke testingAdditional Training:• OpenFOAM Foundation Course, Bracknell, UK, February 2019• PRINCE2 Foundation and Practitioner Course, Dublin, Ireland, April 2020 Show less
