      Albany Medical Center in Albany,NY was where I completed a challenging Clinical Fellowship Year (CFY) and gained valuable experience that helped to jump start and shape my professional career. I provided services to patients of all ages in the intensive care, acute care and rehabilitative units of the hospital as well as the NICU and PICU. The majority of my caseload included performing clinical bedside and videofluoroscopic swallowing studies with patients experiencing neurogenic dysphagia and dysphagia due to pulmonary compromise, the presence of a tracheostomy tube with or without mechanical ventilation and Head and Neck Cancer. In addition, I learned to utilize formalized testing protocols and behavioral observation in the diagnosis and treatment of dysarthria, receptive and expressive aphasia, and cognitive-linguistic deficits.       Speech Language Pathology Supervisor - Acute Care

      Primary responsibilities included managing a clinical caseload for a 300-bed acute care facility as well as completing objective swallowing assessments, such as Modified Barium Swallow studies and Fiberoptic Endoscopic Evaluations of Swallowing (FEES) for the community-based, outpatient population. I was in charge of a staff of 12 SLPs, either of full time, part time or per diem status. I actively participated in Quality Improvement and Quality Assurance initiatives. I was responsible for and effectively managed an annual department budget of $500,000. I founded and served as the Chair of the Oral Care Committee for Unity Hospital, which was the only hospital-based committee dedicated to the topic area of oral care in Western and Central New York. I also served as an active member of various committees, including the Ethics committee, Stroke Steering committee, and the Clinical Ladder committee for the Department of Neurosciences. In addition, I was a steering committee member of the Geriatric Surgical Center of Excellence (GSCE) at Unity Hospital since its inception. The GSCE was the first geriatric surgical program in the nation to achieve accreditation by the American College of Surgeons. I co-created the Nursing Dysphagia Screen in accordance with the NYS DOH and JCAHO National Regulations for Stroke Accredited programs as well as the innovative ICU post-extubation swallow screen which was implemented as a standard of care at Unity Hospital’s ICU. I believe that ongoing Staff Education is key in developing and maintaining a vital and valuable department. Along that vein, I have developed lectures regarding various Speech Pathology protocols and procedures and presented at Noon Conferences to the Medical Residents, Nursing staff and allied health professionals. Finally, I served as a mentor to graduate clinical interns and fellow Speech Pathologists regarding acute care policies, procedures and objective swallowing assessments. Show less
