      Jan 1977 - Jan 1983
      ET1 (SS) - Nuclear

Learned everything that the Navy wanted me to learn about Navy nuclear propulsion. Started out as E-3; obtained E-6 (Petty Officer First Class) prior to leaving (obtained ROTC scholaship). After two years of intense Navy schools (basic electricity & electronics; advanced electronics; RADAR in Great Lakes, IL; Nuclear Power School in Orlando, FL; Nuclear Prototype in Balston Spa, NY) I was assigned to the USS Nathanael Greene, SSBN 636. The Nat Greene was finishing up at Newport News Shipyard & Drydock Company; we took her to Florida for sea/sound trials; then off to Scotland. I completed four deterant patrols. I was qualified as Reactor Operator, Shutdown Reactor Operator, Electrical Operator, Throttleman, Machinery II Upper Level watch, Bridge JA phone talker for manuevering watch, Con JA phone talker during battle-stations. • Metropolitan Edison

      Jan 1984 - Jan 1989
Instrumentation & Control Technician (I&C Technician)

This was my first union job (IBEW 563) and first industrial electronics job. My skills developed in the Navy were of great value here; the nuclear business requires common-sense, good to great craft knowledge, ability to follow procedures, etc. I worked shiftwork for five years in this position. I performed many nuclear, safety related, technical specification surveillance procedures and preventive maintenance activities. I also volunteered to "jump the generators" which means that I entered the primary coolant side of our OTSGs (once through steam generator) to help plug leaky tubes. It's a very complicated process that engineers oversee from a monitoring screen and command/control area. Those of us that do the "jumping" have a very limited stay-time in the high radiation fields that exist in an operating nuclear power plant's primary coolant system (drained of course). I also volunteered for defueling duty in the damaged Unit #2 reactor building. Show less

    • GPU Nuclear

      Aug 1989 - Aug 1994
      Shift Maintenance Foreman

I had a great crew of four disciplines - utilities, mechanical, electrcal, and instrumentation. We operated on a six-weeks rotation (three weeks of days, one week of swings, and one week of mids). My crew maintained the operability of the plant (Three Mile Island, Unit #1); we contributed to the record run of on-line, full-power days that GPU Nuclear earned and enjoyed (Mike Ross, Operations Plant Manager was instrumental in that award). I resigned due to the stress of rotating shiftwork (and the medical community's statement that shiftwork lessens one's lifespan). Other duties included procedure writing and modifying (coordinated by Bill Shucker). Show less

    • Rosemount, Inc.

      Jan 1994 - Jan 1998
      Field Service Engineer

Performed field service work on gas analytical equipment manufactured by Rosemount-Orrville, OH; Rosemount, Anaheim, CA; Rosemount-Shannon, Ireland; & Rosemount- Hasselroth, Germany. Work generally focused on CEMS (continuous emissions monitoring systems) and COMS (continuous opacity monitoring systems); sometimes I was asked to work on Rosemount Measurement products such as the 3095 MultiVariable transmitters. My dispatch center was at Rosemount, Eden Prairie - North American Response Center (NARC). My regional supervisor was based out of Cleveland, Ohio; we also had an office in King of Prussia, PA. • Rosemount Analytical, Inc.

      Jan 1998 - Jan 2003
      Customer Support Engineer

This was a great job, with great co-workers. I primarily fielded technical support calls on just about every product produced by Rosemount Analytical. Being located at the factory, I was able to tap in to resources of the people who built the product(s) or designed the product(s) from the ground up. On a few occasions I was assigned to go to problem customer sites to find out exactly why our product was misbehaving - I enjoyed that. For a while, I was the lead person in the RMR Department (the repair portion of the factory). In this position I got to know all of the factory personnel and the methods that Westinghouse, Hagan, Rosemount had developed over the many, many years of operation at the Orrville plant. Show less

    • RIGAS

      Jul 2003 - now
      President / owner

RIGAS is a small company, eight or so employees. So the title of 'president' is just one of many hats that I wear. Sometimes I'm the lead sanitation engineer (I take out the garbage); sometimes I'm a senior field service engineer (I take my turn servicing customers at their place of business); etc..
