Faculty Advisor: Elizabeth Wohlfert, PhDRegulatory T cells (Tregs) play a central role in maintaining tissue integrity; however, their role in chronic inflammation and infection, especially of the skeletal muscle, is not completely understood. To address this outstanding question, we use infection with the protozoan parasite, Toxoplasma gondii, to establish a non-resolving infection preferentially found in the central nervous system and skeletal muscle. My thesis work has focused on understanding the consequences of chronic infection on skeletal muscle immunity, regeneration, and function. Specifically, this work has focused on how induction of pathogenic Tregs during chronic T. gondii infection affects the coordination of heterogeneous macrophage populations necessary for efficacious tissue repair. Skills acquired/used: Multi-parameter flow cytometric analysis and acquisition, single-cell RNA-sequencing analysis, and tissue sectioning and image acquisition, qPCR, and mouse handling and husbandry.
