    • Portsmouth Arts & Community Education (PACE) - Merged with Learning Links in July 2008

      Mar 2005 - Jul 2008
      Founder and Chief Executive

As the founder of this organisation I was responsible for driving the project, securing funding, establishing a board and managing all the projects. PACE was officially formed by a group of 7 people in March 2005 with the aim of providing access to the arts for all. We delivered projects city wide, promoting enjoyment and participation in the arts, education and creative activities. Driven by a belief that access to creative expression can support people to reengage with learning, build confidence and connect them with their wider community, we partnered with the local authority and grants providers to provide adult learning, community arts projects and specially designed interventions to engage with targeted community. Our work covered: • Adult Learning - funded by the local authority's adult learning budget and targeted those on low incomes, with disabilities and long term unemployed.•Children’s and Young People’s Courses and Workshops - a range of learning opportunities for young people ranging from kite making to film making via drop in sessions through to more structured courses such as radio programming or comic book design targeting young people at risk.• Volunteer Program- We were able to provide volunteering opportunities for people of all abilities and the chance for people of all backgrounds to work together on community projects, and a range of activities from workshop sessions through to large scale event organisation and delivery. • Community Arts Projects - PACE understood that community arts projects can build bridges and bring communities together, building brighter, safer and more cohesive societies. We delivered projects with young people such as murals to encourage ownership and a sense of pride in their environment, and community wide oral history projects to support intergenerational connection. Eventually we decided to merge with a larger charity so we could secure larger scale projects and expand our work. Show less

Nonviolent Communication (NVC) is the life work of Marshall B Rosenberg PhD who dedicated himself to developing and teaching communication that inspires connection, understanding and collaboration, and to understanding what conditions, both external and internal, interfere with people’s natural capacity to be connected to life and to respond humanely in challenging moments.'While we may not consider the way we talk to be ‘violent,’ our words often lead to hurt and pain, whether for others or for ourselves.' – Marshall RosenburgNVC begins by assuming that we all share the same, basic human needs and that everyone is doing the best they can, given the access they have to internal resources, to meet needs. In particular NVC focuses on how language and the presence we bring to our communication can support connection, and offers a map or pathway for clear, honest expression as well as for deep listening.“To listen is to continually give up all expectation and to give our attention, completely and freshly, to what is before us, not really knowing what we will hear or what that will mean. In the practice of our days, to listen is to lean in, softly, with a willingness to be changed by what we hear.”– Nepo, Mark, The Exquisite Risk, Daring to Live an Authentic LifePracticing NVC in a group is a wholehearted exploration of speaking up, listening, establishing rapport and recognising differences.
