Sept 2015 - Dec 2017English Literacy Resource Primary School TeacherPeace Corps Samoa’s current program focus is on promoting English literacy in Samoan primary schools. The Primary School English Literacy Project was developed in close partnership with the Ministry of Education, Sports, and Culture (MESC) and was officially launched in fall 2012. Volunteers in the Primary School English Literacy Project play an important role in helping Samoans develop the skills they need to succeed and thrive. Volunteers not only build the English literacy skills of students but help teachers incorporate student-centered teaching methods. They also work to improve information and communication technology resources and to increase the community’s involvement in literacy activities.Accomplishments and Responsbilities: -Directed preparations for Peace Corps Samoa’s 50th anniversary celebration, including: designed and implemented an outreach of over 1,500 former volunteers in junction with Peace Corps HQ: coordinated the itinerary and other logistics as part of a committee for 200+ attendees. -Created, planned and implemented as part of a 3-person committee the inaugural Boys United In Leadership Development conference, a 3 day camp teaching 30 boys representing 10 schools partnered with 10 community advocates about leadership, healthy life choices, and future career possibilities. -Formed and facilitated English literacy instruction for 50 at risk students in 8 small groups. Students saw an increase of over a 50% in their English Literacy Assessment (ELA) scores. -Awarded as a winner of the Blog It Home Contest. My blog as well as 7 others were elected from a pool of over 300 applicants to spend a week in Washington D.C. sharing our host country’s culture with multiple groups. Since our inception seven years ago, we have planted/distributed more than 32,000 trees, given out more than 41,000 seedlings and engaged nearly 17,500 volunteers. We accomplish this through tree giveaways and plantings in neighborhoods, schools, parks, churches and other non-profit spaces. We love bringing communities together through the beauty, health, and gift of trees. Responsibilities: • Pre-event preparation, from soliciting volunteers to organizing the flow of the event to preparing materials.• Orchestrate and upkeep approximately 30 partnerships to execute over 40 events to ensure 5,700 trees are planted in the city of Charlotte. • Manage and create an ongoing event calendar in partnership with TreesCharlotte’s sponsors, volunteers, and event hosts. • Responsible for pre-event preparation, including soliciting volunteers to organizing the flow of the event to preparing materials.• Create signup forms and calendar posts in WordPress.• Track and archive event analytics for reporting impact and progress. • Engage volunteers prior, during, and post events. • Execute email communications to volunteers, sponsors and all parties associated with events.• Delegate event setup, including unloading and organizing 7-gallon trees, moving tents/tables, water coolers, etc.• Oversee day-of-event management and troubleshooting to ensure smooth execution.
