Activities and Societies: To get exposure to issues going on in China I found and attended a nonprofit networking event called BCD Events once a month. It would allow organizations at each event to introduce their mission and spread awareness to current issues affecting the Chinese community. I studied abroad for a year in Beijing, China where I spent one semester attending the CET Academic Program's intensive language courses (with an English prohibited Chinese language pledge). The following semester I did an independent study of Chinese through the university's own Chinese language study program for internationals.

Worked at Taricaya Ecological Reserve that protects 500ha of rainforest and develops different projects towards wildlife research and action for conservation. It consists of a team of local and foreign entrepreneurs, biologists, veterinarians and nature specialists living in the rainforest working on different projects within the Reserve. My duties includes: Maintenance and care for rescued animals and the conservation site. I helped improve team relationships by initiating and planning social events for workers and volunteers. I collaborated daily with other volunteers to accomplish daily activities, such as helping build equipment in the reserve, feeding the rescued animals, and conducting data research on wildlife. I also learned limited Spanish to successfully communicate with Peruvian workers and locals. I helped problem solve with the Monkey Release Program to enable their successful exit from human care. I also enriched my critical thinking, adaptation, and cross cultural competence skills by navigating cultural differences and unfamiliar environments. Show less
