They have located part of the foundation and a kitchen midden (garbage pit) for one of two houses that stood on the site prior to the 1861 fire that destroyed the fourth church. It's an exciting find, and this week, students, instructors and interns were hard at work unearthing more of the foundation of what was once 107 Union Street.SCCC archaeological students and instructors first began using the site for excavations this spring during the Field Methods course. Students in the Archaeological Research course will continue to work there through August. They’ll be joined by young archaeologists later this month for the Hands-on Archaeology for Kids class.“We’re very excited to be able to work with the First Reformed Church on this project, and to have such an interesting site for our students to work with and to share with the general public,” said Diana Carter, an Adjunct Faculty Member in the SCCC Community Archaeology Program.Laura Lee, Archivist/Historian for the First Reformed Church, said that the College’s presence at the church has several advantages. “It’s a wonderful community partnership,” she said. “It’s an excavation we’ve had in mind to do since the 1970s, so this is a very significant and special partnership that we have for the Stockade Historic District.”https://www.facebook.com/healey.derek/posts/10209880961284802 Show less
