In Manila our partners were providing education and social support in the slum area of Navotas to vulnerable children. On Mindoro and Marinduque they were helping local people to protect their land from foreign mining companies. The partners were also empowering people made homeless by flooding to form communities, build settlements and claim their legal right to medicine and a power supply.• In Bolivia I visited partners working with Quechua Indians in the High Andes, teaching new agricultural skills. We were also supporting an education project for children, and ensuring that their diet was sufficiently nutritious for them to study.I have taken courses in Spanish, in management, radio and television skills, photography, video production and editing, and survival skills in hostile environments. • Samaritan's Purse

      Feb 2013 - Jan 2018

I set up a new base in Rasuwa, a remote mountainous district of Nepal, which was severely impacted by a 7.8 magnitude earthquake. I led a team of five expats and eighteen nationals, managing distributions in the initial relief phase. We gave out NFIs (blankets, kitchen kits), WFP food (rice, oil, plumpy doze), shelter materials (tarps, CGI) and WASH materials (hygiene kits, latrine kits, aqua tabs). I was responsible for fleet management, security and government liaison. I worked with our WASH specialist to launch a $100,000 project to repair a water supply system for the district capital. I also gained approval from SP Nepal leadership for a $5000 proposal to repair six water mills.See my video blog here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=e7qgh8uMtCo Show less Read my blog from the field here: https://www.samaritans-purse.org.uk/article/samaritans-purse-uk-personnel-encounter-heartbreak-and-inspiration-in-northern-iraqI prepared budgets and activity plans for the Erbil and Duhok governorates of Kurdistan. I attended cluster meetings, and built relationships with UNHCR, donors such as OCHA and DFID, and the Kurdistan government. I also worked directly on program management, procuring 12,000 winter jackets, arranging for their trucking and warehousing, and helping to distribute them to IDP beneficiaries in mountain villages. I liaised with the government’s Emergency Committee to organise the import of 300,000 pairs of shoes for IDPs. I secured a warehouse for them in Duhok, and worked with a government minister to distribute them to camps. I sourced 20 tons of food, to be flown by military helicopter to Yazidis on Mount Sinjar. I managed warehouses, directing a national team to receive and dispatch supplies. Show less Read my blog from the field here: http://www.samaritanspurse.org/article/come-buy-without-moneyThe Organisation for the Co-ordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA) funded this $236,000, three-month project to provide essential non-food items to 2000 households who had been pillaged by rebel militia. I led a Congolese team of 16 contractual staff and 100 day labourers. We identified and assisted vulnerable Bantus and Pygmies in and around the Okapi Forest Reserve in Province Orientale. During the project the Mai Mai militia continued to kill soldiers and civilians in the reserve, and we worked at Security Level Three (the highest before evacuation). We mobilised local merchants and village communities, and organised four fairs where people used coupons to buy essential items such as clothes, cooking pots and mattresses. As part of this project I recruited staff, prepared and adjusted budgets, and submitted Purchase Requests and Field Expense Reports. I networked with civilian and military authorities (Congolese Army, Reserve Guards and Blue Helmets), with other NGOs, with UNHCR, and with the United Nations cluster group for non-food items.
