Soil functioning indicators (INFOSOL): a methodological approach for developing and assessing dynamic soil functions within the soil protection strategy context. This project was conducted in the Soil Protection Strategy Framework by EU. It aimed to support a more rigorous yet readily implementable assessment of agricultural soil quality through the development of soil functioning indicators. The project involved field measurements (dye tracers, solute transfers, soil transects characterisation), soil sampling for laboratory analysis (structure and hydrodynamic properties characterisation) and soil water fluxes modelling for four agricultural plots contrasted by the soil type and cropping and agricultural treatment history. Field measurements were linked with with the hydrodynamic model's outputs to derive the desired set of indicators. I took the project over 2.5 years after its initial launch. Show less

Agricultural and Biological Engineering Department - Hydrologic science and b labDissertation title: Novel quantification of long-term hydrological and spatiotemporal landscape dynamics of coupled natural human systems: the case study of the Tempisque-Palo Verde National Park wetland, Costa Rica.Advisor: Prof. Rafael Muñoz-CarpenaThe main outputs of my thesis are the following:(1) Publicly available database consisting of (i) audited and standardized hydrological, meteorological, and LCLU data from existing datasets collected from local and external institutions; (ii) our high-resolution data from a field monitoring network in the Palo Verde National Park wetland (rainfall, water level, EC< soil moisture); and (iii) land cover and wetland hydrology spatiotemporal data from satellite remote sensing;(2) showcased and leveraged the potential of Landsat and MODIS open-access satellite imagery to document and study the long-term land-cover change in the study area using the recent cloud-based Google Earth Engine (GEE) platform;(3) reconstructed and studied the PVNP wetland hydroperiod historic spatiotemporal dynamics coupling the 2000-2016 daily MODIS imagery and our water-level instrumentation network;(4) showed through data decomposition technique that the decreasing river discharge from upstream overuse led to unexpected increased flooding in the downstream tidal portion of the Tempisque River. This phenomenon could be playing a role in the severe ecological transformations suffered by the PVNP wetland. Show less

We aimed to identify the driving forces of estuarine changes using satellite remote sensing. We analysed Landsat satellite imagery to characterize the regional-scale freshwater and dissolved organic matter detention effect by oyster reefs and its short and long-term spatiotemporal variability.
