My work included optimization and development of several sputtering, deposition, and plasma enhanced chemicalvapor deposition techniques for thin film deposition. I was de facto leader of the small cleanroom group with two lab technicians and gained experience running such a smalland mixed group, professionally as well as socially, and also gained additional experience in working with industry.

Silicon microfanrication, integrated optical chips The work was a natural extension of the position as a research assistant. The work was on optical components based on high index materials. In parallel, I passed the required courses, taught and supervised bachelor and master students, and published my research. The position was related to a large development project with an external partner and included independent analysis, deposition, and characterization of high refractive index optical thin films and small compact optical components for integrated optical communication. The success of theproject strengthened my determination to pursue a research career.

I analyzed the chemical composition of optical thin films; I then used the results to optimize the material characteristics of the thin films for lowest optical losses.

As part of a large 3-year EU-funded project involving several partners, the work includes automated manipulation of nanocomponents with 3D visualization, haptic feedback, and virtual reality simulations of forces in the nanoworld. My part in the project has been to develop tools for handling nanostructures (mainly nanotubes, nanowires, andnanofibers) and using these tools to explore the fundamental physical characteristics of such manipulation scenarios. At MIC I also taught an advanced four-part course on nanosystems engineering over two semesters (fall of 2005 and 2006). This course was also part of my official pedagogical qualification as an assistant professor at DTU. I also took additional courses including Mentoring of Experts and Ph. D. supervision at the Learning Lab, DTU, and have supervised and co-supervised several students, including trainees from primary school (9th grade), senior high school students, and university students ranging from first semester to M.Sc. projects. My work has involved all of my past experiences in optics, materials science, surface characterization, micro- and nanofabrication and much more. I have also had the pleasure of co-coordination a national network of nanotechnology for companies and universities. I have participated in a large national project funded by HTF involving laser fabrication of microantennas and sensors. The work has also included writing project applications for HTF, F&I (videnkupon), STF and EU. The successful applications have resulted in project work with the Danish and European industry as well and universities within the fields of sensors, optics and microtechnology. Show less
