I am responsible for guiding anatomy sessions in the Dissecting Room at St George's Hospital Medical School. As part of this, I facilitate and educate students (medical, physiotherapy, nursing, paramedic and biomedical) on human anatomy. I am particularly interested in teaching neuroanatomy. I have taught all year groups, ranging from first years to clinical year medics.I have greatly enjoyed the experiences teaching has given me, and learnt a great deal by interacting with and working alongside the students to further their knowledge, as well as my own. Show less During my research year at St George's Hospital Medical School, I was an undergraduate researcher looking at the anomalous diffusion properties of the corpus callosum using diffusion MRI techniques. This research aimed to link anomalous diffusion properties to the known histological literature of the corpus callosum. We successfully showed a significant link between the two, with the paper currently being prepared for publishing. This research formed the basis of my final dissertation thesis. During the research, I was responsible for manually segmenting the MRI scans. In such, I had to manually delineate the corpus callosum for every subject, which then allowed for an averaged structure template. This required hours of manual work using ITK-SNAP. Alongside this, I was responsible for the statistical side of the study, aiming to prove significance overall. The final dissertation was written by myself, and is now being adapted for publishing. This was an enjoyable and very educational endeavour; one which I would greatly like to continue to explore in the near future. He was a member of Chambers for 60 years, a longstanding Senior Treasury Counsel at the Old Bailey, and in silk he both prosecuted and defended in some of the most challenging and noteworthy cases at the criminal Bar. He would come back to Chambers after court and entertain young and old members of chambers alike with anecdotes from his ongoing and past cases. The many current members of Chambers who had the privilege of being led by him remember him as a wonderful advocate: holding the jury’s rapt attention, fearsome in cross-examination, and in complete control of the court (usually judge included). Michael died in 2018, and never lost his enthusiasm for the life of the advocate. We hope that the Michael Corkery QC Memorial Moot competition is a fitting tribute to him. Show less
