      The North Carolina Law Enforcement Torch Run® for Special Olympics unites officers from law enforcement agencies and corrections departments across the state in an effort to raise funds and awareness for Special Olympics North Carolina The Torch Run efforts to raise funds include: collecting corporate sponsorships, T-shirt and hat donations and hosting unique fundraising events such as building sits, polar plunges and golf tournaments.Each summer, law enforcement officials carry the Flame of Hope across the state in The Torch Run Final Leg, culminating in the lighting of the cauldron to officially open the Special Olympics North Carolina Summer Games in Raleigh. The 2,000-mile, 15-day Torch Run Relay involves more than 2,500 law enforcement officers and personnel representing more than 200 law enforcement agencies across North Carolina. Show less

Officers must make custodial arrests and handle mental commitments, testify in court, provide escorts, report unsafe conditions in the community, conduct criminal investigations by gathering evidence, interviewing victims and witnesses, prepare detailed reports, handle complex situations such as hostage negotiation, high risk arrests, suicide attempts, hazardous material spills and disaster scenes. Officers are required to engage in covert surveillance and stakeouts, investigate traffic accidents and enforce motor vehicle laws, provide traffic control, monitor high accident locations and may be required to operate speed measurement equipment. Officers must perform searches of people, vehicles, buildings and large outdoor areas. Officers perform rescue operations which may involve lifting, carrying or dragging persons and heavy objects, climbing over obstacles, jumping up or down, climbing through openings, jumping over obstacles, ditches and streams, crawling in confined areas and using body force to gain entrance through barriers and renders first-aid to the injured. Officers must deal fairly and impartially with others in many complicated and dangerous situations. Officers may be assigned training responsibilities.
