Children's Hospital Los Angeles (CHLA)
Aug 2013 - nowAs a member of CHLA’s Pediatric Orthopaedic Center team, I am in charge of facilitating any impending matters required by the primary investigator to best comply with Institutional Review Board practices. This includes but is not limited to: preparing and implementing necessary administrative task, maintaining electronic records, as well as the recruitment and consenting of patients and their families for various research projects. I work under the direct guidance of Dr. Bianca Edison M.D., Dr. Tracy Zaslow M.D., and Anita Herrera Hamilton PhD. in conducting quality Pediatric research. Currently, I spend one day per week at CHLA’s Arcadia location working under Dr. Edison. I greet the families in the exam rooms and explain to them my role as a research assistant. My main focus is to educate the families on how critical pediatric research is. In order for the data collected to be implemented for the use of evidence-based medicine it must be generalizable to the population in question. Therefore, it is imperative that scientist continue to explore the differences between adults and children. As the science continues to evolve the treatments and interventions will also get more refined. This will lead to better clinical outcomes. I am passionate about research because this behind-the-scenes hard work will add to the advancement of medicine. Moreover, the patients receive the benefits. I love being a part of this incredible team. Working with individuals of this caliber inspires me to work that much harder. I’ve learned that research is a tireless, relentless field. In order to continue to lead the field an incredible amount of teamwork must be demonstrated. Show less Working on the Float Team at CHLA provides me with a unique perspective and incredible learning opportunities every day. The Float Team supplies patient care staff to various units throughout the esteemed hospital. Several of the units include: Rehabilitation Medicine, Gastroenterology, Hematology/Oncology, Organ Transplant, Emergency Medicine, Infectious Diseases, as well as Medical Surgery units (Cardio-thoracic, Neurosurgery, Pulmonology, Nephrology, Orthopaedic, Urology, Plastic and Maxillofacial Surgery). As a Nursing Resource asset we are cross trained to perform competently and fulfill many different roles in diverse specialties.I am responsible for acquiring and documenting vital signs (temperature, pulse, respirations, blood pressure, oxygenation saturations), obtaining patient measurements (weight, height, abdominal and head circumference), caring for and educating patients about proper hygiene and catheter maintenance or other home care techniques/skills, charting input/output qualities and quantities, discontinuation of Peripheral IV’s, assisting in complex medical procedures, triage, “sitting” as a 1:1 observer for Psychiatric patients to ensure their safety, transporting patients, administering diagnostic test (EKG, rapid strep, pregnancy, and urine analysis), and support with discharges/admissions/ code blue emergencies. Participating in this role has allowed me the opportunity to connect with patients and families during extremely vulnerable times. I have the privilege of contributing directly to improving their health. Throughout this experience I have learned a great deal about medicine, different specialties, communication, and teamwork. More profound is how much there is to further discover. Every facet of medicine has room for improvement. That idea is truly exciting. I am so grateful to be immersed in an environment of like-minded learners and teachers committed to saving lives and exploring the human condition. Show less As a Service Technician in the Neonatal and Infant Critical Care Unit of Children's Hospital Los Angeles, ranked No.5 by U.S. News and World Report (December 2013), I was responsible for seamless transitional care between patients and physicians, RNs, nurse practitioners, and respiratory therapists.
