      Summer Intern

I worked in the Zoology Department under Dr. Jeff Buckel and my advisor, Paul Rudershausen. My summer project was to study marine worms living in the soil of local tidal creeks. Once a month we collected samples, sifted and sorted, then examined the specimens to identify species. We used the data to analyze both population densities and diversity, and compared the data between to creeks. The ultimate goal was to see if habitat alteration had any direct effect on Mummichog, a species of intertidal fish. The worms were important to monitor, as they are the main diet of the fish. I had to look under advanced microscopes to identify different features of the animals and classify them accordingly. The most challenging part was to be able to notice certain traits that could determine which exact species we were dealing with. Although I worked with my advisor and his research, I mainly worked on my own part of this project independently. I focused on the marine worms with only an occasional check-in with my advisor. This experience taught me a great deal about marine animals and how important they are. However, this is not directly associated with what I want to study when I enter the industry. The real value of this fellowship has been to gain the experience of working in professional labs, with advanced equipment, to help scientists with their work. This was something that I could not learn as well in a university setting, being that any research or learning was for the pure desire to learn, not because of a mandated policy. I was granted access to a great amount of advanced laboratory equipment. I mainly dealt with high-focus microscopes and computer software, which was used to view and examine the specimens for classification. I also used a centrifuge to separate fish sperm from the fish semen samples. Show less

      HSE Stewardship & Operations Manager

My primary responsibilities are involved with commercial operations in North America. I currently manage both the safety data sheet (SDS) generation process for all experimental samples and finished goods in the US, and the third party inspection process for our customer bulk facilities across the country. My goal is to ensure we operate above the requirements set forth by governing bodies, optimize our ways of working, and keep our focus on the end customer and their needs. In addition to my primary roles, I have also been involved in a wide variety of projects including risk management, HSE metrics and KPIs, and operational excellence sessions in other parts of the organization. I am also on the steering committee for our Young Leaders Employee Resource Group, which provides our local employees opportunities to learn about areas of our business, social networking, and personal development to grow in career paths.
