    • GOAL Global

      Jan 2006 - Feb 2015

I was responsible for setting up and developing the Children’s Empowerment and Protection (CEP) sector within GOAL Global. Across Sierra Leone, Kenya, Ethiopia and India, my role was leadership in programme design, quality and cross-country coherence. Gender needs responsive and adaptive, this included developing and facilitating strategic direction that focused on micro to macro-level engagement through strategic partnerships, change management, cross-country learning, supporting development of innovation (e.g. integrating PAR methodologies, urban livelihoods, educational innovation, working in liminal spaces), M&E, etc. Safeguarding and Mainstreaming: I headed GOAL Global’s in- and across-country Safeguarding strategy, design, rollout, and review processes. This included a 2015 safeguarding audit of safeguarding systems, staff training, and policy localisation (addressing national safeguarding legislation, PSEA referral protocols, cluster networking, etc.) across 7 country programmes in Africa, Latin America and Asia. Coming from a background of Child Protection expertise, my assets-based approach has stressed staff, children and community-centred design and buy-in to safeguarding that is robust, proportional and culturally respectful in its application and design. As well as systems, administration and governance strengthening, my specific safeguarding programmatic focus was on integrating SPHERE standards in child protection, livelihoods, WASH, health and nutrition programming in both development and humanitarian contexts. Show less Moving between three GOAL country programmes I was responsible for child protection strategy. I supported managers, staff & children in (a) paradigm change processes towards (Participatory) Action Research, evidence-based & psychosocial focused programming for street-connected children and their communities, (b) supporting the implementation of critical institutional child protection standards & mechanisms for GOAL and partner programmes, and (c) developing an M&E framework (that included database case management). Innovative work included PAR work with young sex workers and their communities (Ethiopia and Sierra Leone) and PAR community-led responses to FGM for the Samburu pastoralist tribe in Marsabit (Kenya). Strong focus on developing vocational training, employment and entrepreneurism. Show less Based in Freetown, I (a) developed Action Research-, evidence-based & psychosocial programming in educational innovation, psychosocial and FTR support, livelihoods, health and protection for street-connected children and youth, (b) developed critical institutional child safe-guarding standards & mechanisms for GOAL and its partners, (c) continued technical support to GOAL Ethiopia (see below), and (d) set-up/developed M&E mechanisms including database of casework and intervention outcomes. Reporting directly to two Country Directors, I supported/managed 125 staff and managers in two country programmes targeting approximately 5,000 children & youth. Show less
