      Senior reservoir engineer

      • Designed and facilitated installation of a state-of-the-art test-skid for the Senlac Thermal Facility yielding valuable information from the very first SAGD project using surface drilled horizontal wells in Canada

    • Cenovus energy

      Jan 1997 - Mar 2021

      • Engaged with more than 120 experts, academics, and research centers globally and collaborated with over 50 of them to develop a suite of short, medium, and long-term solutions to dramatically bring down the cost of carbon abatement, to maintain the petroleum advantage of affordability and energy density, without the drawback of emissions. These initiatives ranged, on one hand, from improving energy efficiency of the upstream operations - both sub-surface & surface, to low emissions-intensity mid-stream and down-stream operations, and on the other novel approaches to use oil & gas that do not result in emissions • Developed a cost effective, diluent-free, and energy efficient rail alternative to pipelining diluted bitumen with multiple stages of lab work and testing• Evaluated feasibility of two novel approaches of bitumen recovery, significantly more energy efficient than SAGD and SAP, through conceptual development, reservoir and surface modeling, and economic assessment• Liaised with the non-operating partner (ConocoPhillips) for co-funding of the technology projects and provided regular updates to both internal and partner management• Presented the Keynote entitled “How will we get out of this pit?” at CHOA-SPE Slugging it Out Conference, Calgary, 2017 Show less • Enhanced Solvent Aided Process for oil recovery to allow for wider well spacing, and demonstrated though field test a reduction of energy intensity by 35% and of sustaining capital by 40%• Championed Cenovus’s multi-disciplinary technology development program and helped provide strategic focus through evaluation, refinement, and management of the portfolio of projects aimed at improving energy efficiency and environmental performance across the whole operation chain. Liaised with the non-operating partner (ConocoPhillips). Guided and motivated a team of engineers and scientists to develop novel energy-efficient reservoir recovery approaches Show less • Developed conceptual framework and a pilot of ‘waste to carbon sequestration’ aimed at reducing cost of carbon abatement, and promoted its social visibility/acceptability through international conferences and publications• Pioneered development of solvent based methods for thermal heavy oil recovery, starting with theoretical development, numerical modeling, and following with field testing. With one pilot at Senlac Thermal Project, and three at Christina Lake Thermal Project, proved that solvents can reduce emissions intensity by 30-40%, and recover used solvent in excess of 85%.• Directed development of Cenovus’s modeling research and unique in-house reservoir simulation tool resulting in dramatic improvement in its predictive capability for reservoir performance and visualization • Assessed over 30 third-party heavy oil upgrading solutions for their techno-economic feasibility and relevance to Cenovus. Initiated government and industry led consortia (through INET and PTAC) to assess feasibility of (a) non-fossil fuel options for oil sands with a view to reduce carbon emissions (b) an artificial reservoir as a common test facility to expedite development of new recovery technologies Show less
