In my role within the Feed the Future Malawi Improved Seed Systems and Technologies (FtF-MISST) project, I focused on the Viable Sweet Potato Technologies for Africa component. This initiative aimed to integrate agriculture and nutrition by promoting the production and enhancing the utilization of six varieties of vitamin A-rich Orange Fleshed Sweet Potatoes among pregnant women, lactating women, and children under five years old, with the goal of addressing vitamin A deficiency. My responsibilities included planning, implementing, and monitoring and evaluating the project within my designated district of implementation. Show less In this role, I was responsible for project implementation focused on empowering low-income and vulnerable households to achieve adequate and sustainable access to - and control over - resources to attain their livelihood rights without undermining their natural resource base. My work resulted in strengthened local economies and improved food security for these households, achieved through environmentally friendly agricultural practices, enhanced farmer organization capacity, and the development of suitable agribusiness models. Show less This role involved implementation of an emergency flood recovery project in Nsanje district following the catastrophic floods that ravaged Malawi due to incessant rains in late 2014 and early 2015, causing the Shire River to overflow. Nsanje district, in particular, suffered severe devastation, with over 74,000 people displaced and significant damage to homes and infrastructure, resulting in numerous casualties. The aftermath of the disaster was compounded by outbreaks of diseases, worsening the already dire situation for affected communities. Show less
