      PGCert Cuneiform and Ancient Near Eastern Studies Merit

      My postgraduate degree focused specifically on the translation and transliteration of various ancient languages written in cuneiform. I mainly studied Sumerian and Akkadian, though my research also briefly touched upon Hittite, Ugaritic, Eblaite, Elamite and Old Persian. For Sumerian, I studied Šulgi, Gilgamesh and Akka, Gudea Cylinder A and various Ur-Nammu bricks.For Akkadian, I studied Hammurabi's Law Codex and his building inscriptions and Enuma Eliš (The Babylonian Creation Ethos).

      I recieved a First Class Hons and my degree specialism focused on aspects of archaeology within the Eastern Mediterranean, the Levant and Egypt. My dissertation was based on the evolution of gender roles in prehistoric Cyprus, from the Neolithic to the Bronze Age.       This position included many responsibilities, such as attending events that represented the University, guided tours of the campus, helping out with Fresher's events and being involved with the student community as a whole. One of the main aspects of this role was to encourage young people to look at Higher Education and the various benefits that University qualifications can offer. I attended various training for this role, such as manual handling, aspects of customer service, training for effective guided tours amongst other things. Show less

      This position included taking orders and payment, preparing both food and drinks, employing table service and ensuring that the Café was presentable and clean at all times. Due to the nature of the establishment, it could get extremely busy at peak times, and so customer service and efficiency were a high priority.

      I passed the barista training programme at Costa Coffee, and recieved my single bean and flat white badges. This role included serving customers, regular cash handling, creating both hot and cold beverages, preparing various types of food and clearing tables. Due to the high brand standards that Costa expects of its employees, it is vital to be efficient and to always employ great customer service. Before leaving this role, I received further training at a supervisory level.

      This role includes regular cash handling and the processing of sales and admissions. I am also trained on selling and processing English Heritage membership. The site has a museum, ancient ruins and a replica Roman townhouse, and so I am required to partake in various health and safety checks to ensure that the site is safe for visitors and that all of the collections are in good order.I am also trained to operate school discovery visits, in which I take groups of children around the site and teach them about the importance of the history and archaeological remains.       This role is supported by the Royal Air Force Museum American Foundation, and the National Heritage Lottery Fund. Responsibilities include:• Leading on the NLHF Activity Plan - ensuring all elements are inclusive and accessible for a wide audience • Delivering engaging careers and museum outreach at national events and within school settings• Designing and implementing a Museum-wide apprenticeship programme and be an internal advocate for apprentices, sharing knowledge about best practice guidance and ensuring that policies and practice reflect up to date guidance• Ensuring that the Museum is able to attract a diverse range of high quality apprenticeship candidates and meets our statutory obligations with regard to apprentices• Designing and implementing a Museum wide work experience programme to include paid work experience opportunities alongside shorter insight experiences (e.g. partnering with local schools)• Ensuring that the Museum is able to attract a diverse range of work experience students across all organisational disciplines• Working with the Museum’s Community Engagement Managers in London and Cosford in order to develop links and work in partnership with local community organisations, groups and educational institutions• Working with the Museum’s Volunteering Manager to align the Skills Pathways Programme with our Volunteering Programme and initiatives and facilitate increased opportunities for skills development and progression• Leading on organisational resilience and brand growth to showcase the museum as a viable career. There are several different hangars with various exhibitions, aircraft, galleries and interactive displays. This role focusses on the visitors experience of the museum, and to ensure that their time has been enjoyable. As an attendant in the exhibitions, I would speak to visitors and answer any queries that they may have and give them relevant information regarding the history of the RAF and the objects and collections that the museum holds. I also worked in the visitor centre and use the EPOS till system. This involves greeting visitors, processing school visits and group visits, and other such duties. I also took on the role of guided tours around the Hawker-Siddeley Nimrod R1 aircraft. I also worked with the Access and Learning team to provide both internal and external outreach programmes. This included developing and delivering small activities and generally supporting through their day to day activity if required. Furthermore, I undertook extensive voluntary work with the Marketing Manager on updating the website and social media for the museum, to gain a better understanding of how we market our establishment and engage with the public. One of my main tasks was to upload and digitise collections based at our sites to the website for people to view. Furthermore, I also took on extra voluntary duties and training under the Collections Management and Curatorial departments. This culminated in helping to install the new "100 Years of the RAF" exhibition at Cosford. Through this, I have been trained on the CMS database and have also been given training on Museum Accreditation and Spectrum 5.0. Show less
