Vance is a Professor in the University of Alabama at Birmingham (UAB) School of Nursing and psychologist actively pursuing research in positive and negative neuroplasticity, neurocognitive aging, neurocognitive remediation, aging with HIV, and more recently neurocognition in cancer survivors. With a passion for successful cognitive aging and for mentoring scientific leaders, Dr. Vance’s work has resulted in +310 publications including +245 peer-reviewed articles (51% as 1st author) as well as numerous book chapters and editorials, and has disseminated his research prolifically in +350 national and international presentations across 22 countries/territories. In 2011, he received a White House invitation to attend the first forum on aging with HIV and has participated as an invited member of the National Institutes of Health (NIH) Think Tank – Working Group on HIV and Aging sponsored by the Office of AIDS Research to develop the national research agenda, published in the Journal of Acquired Immunodeficiency Syndromes. He participants on many editorial boards and is the founding editor of Nursing: Research and Reviews. He has been awarded several research grants. In 2016, he was awarded a $2.96 million dollar R01 grant from the National Institute of Mental Health (NIMH) titled, “An RCT of Speed of Processing Training in Middle-Aged and Older Adults with HIV” and later a $404,000 grant from the National Institute on Nursing Research (NINR) titled, “Individualized-Targeted Cognitive Training in Older Adults with HAND.” Mas kaunti
